  • Health, Culture and Swahili Language (Summer Program)

Program Overview
This summer language and culture program is designed to provide a unique educational opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the culture and society of Swahili-Speaking Tanzania. This program is hosted at the Taaluma Institute, located in Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania. 
 
Academics
The program offers classroom instruction, language exchange with native speakers, worshops, excursions, and cultural activities. It uses a functional approach and is ideal for students who would like to learn Swahili as they enrich their cross-cultural experience and language proficiency.
 
Highlights
Past excursions have included Arusha (at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro), Bagamoyo, and Zanzibar. Students regularly attend local cultural events, visit schools, health centers and other social community organizations. Students also often have the opportunity to meet the local community.
 
 
  • Community Health and Development (Summer Program)

Program Overview
This six-credit program provdes an in-depth introduction to Tanazania. Students spend four weeks abroad in June and July, experiencing cultural immersion in a rural area in Tanzania where they learn about community health and social programs in this part of East Africa.
 
Academics
Students develop research proposals prior to departing for Tanzania. While in Karagwe, students perform ethnographic research on their topic. Students use the data collected in-country to complete their research project and subsequent papers. 
 
Highlights
This program exposes students to a broad variety of topics related to health services, public health, the United Nations Millenium Goals, and international development in Africa. Students are housed on the grounds of a local hospital in Karagwe in western Tanzania.
