African Studies Program—New things!

  • The Graduate Certificate Program
    • The Graduate Certificate Program in African Studies was approved by the office of the provost on March 23, 2007. The program is designed for masters, Ph.D. and professional school students at Pitt who desire an opportunity to intensify their study of Africa and develop real insight into issues of critical importance in their individual fields. The program complements the already existing undergraduate certificate program in African Studies.
  • Title VI USFL program
    • The African Studies Program was awarded a two-year, $170,000 grant from the State Department of Education under the Title VI programs: the Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Languages (UISFL). The grant will be used to strengthen and improve undergraduate teaching, research and materials in African Studies, establish study abroad programs in Africa and expand outreach to schools in the Pittsburgh area during the academic years 2007-2008 & 2008-2009.
  • Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad program
    • The African Studies Program was awarded the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad program grant to allow teachers from the Washington County, PA, an opportunity to travel to Ghana (Africa), obtain valuable experience while developing new-Africa-focused curricula for use in their classrooms. This is part of our outreach activities to promote the teaching of Africa in our schools.
