Faculty News:

We are pleased to announce two new faculty grants for course development in African Studies, funded under the Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language grant from the US Department of Education.  The first of these offers $3,000.00 to faculty to support the development of new undergraduate courses on Africa, while the second provides $1,500.00 to enable faculty expand the African component of an existing course.  In the latter case, the Africa component should be at least 25 percent.  The new course development grant would be ideal for faculty who either have a new course proposal in the pipeline or intend to propose one by the November 1st deadline for new courses at Pitt.  In either case, the courses must be designed for implementation in the 2008-09 academic year.

Pitt to Offer Xhosa:

Beginning Spring 2008, Pitt will offer a new African language, Xhosa (one of the official languages of South Africa spoken by over 8 million people).  In addition, we intend expanding Swahili offerings from the current levels 1 and 2 to 3 and 4 next year. These efforts to expand African language offerings at Pitt have been made possible by the UISFL grant.
