Undergraduate Certificate:
The African Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh coordinates the undergraduate certificate program designed to provide students with an opportunity for the interdisciplinary study of Africa. The overarching goal is to deepen the knowledge of students and expand their understanding of Africa through a wide range of course offerings drawn from various departments.

For the undergraduate, the certificate in African Studies is an ideal complimentary to the disciplinary major. Students concentrate their studies in an academic department but pursue interdisciplinary and comparative work which covers a broad range of topics relating to Africa in various departments according to their individual interests. In addition to course work, students are also provided with opportunities to participate in study abroad, research projects, symposia, lectures, conferences, and workshops to enrich their understanding of the continent.

The University of Pittsburgh offers a wide range of African Studies courses that include core courses with 100 percent African content, and a wide variety of other courses regularly taught by core faculty which contain significant African content. In addition to those listed, most departments offer courses in directed study and independent work with Africanist faculty.
