Starting in Fall 2017, the Asian Studies Center is pleased to offer experiential learning opportunities, allowing students to learn more about Asia outside of the classroom. Please see below for some of these opportunities!
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED
- What study abroad programs might be a good fit for you, and how you can afford them?
- Which Asian Studies classes are right for you from a student perspective?
- How to find internships or advanced degree programs that take align with your interest and expertise in Asia?
- What kinds of careers are available to Asia-focused graduates both here and abroad?
- How you can best promote your global experience?
Join our mentorship program! The center will match first and second year students with third and fourth year students with similar interests as a way to help create community and build knowledge about opportunities in and related to Asia. We will also help support the cost of mentor/mentee meetings, as well as organize alumni and career oriented meet-and-greets over the course of the year. Students who complete the mentorship program will receive recognition.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED
Please contact Emily Rook-Koepsel (firstname.lastname@example.org), with your name, year in school, geographic area of focus, and potential subject of interest (e.g. pop culture, film, banking in Asia, humanities graduate school, managing health sciences and Asian Studies topics).
KICK OFF EVENT - WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 11 @ 6 PM | 4217 WWPH (Dinner provided)
Partnership for Advancing Globalized Education
In collaboration with Pitt’s School of Education, ASC offers 3-credit pre-professional internships for Pitt undergraduates interested in secondary social studies education with a particular focus on the cultures, people, history, and contemporary issues of China. Preference will be given to undergraduates who are currently enrolled in one of our certificate program.
Under the supervision of Center staff, a graduate student in the School of Education’s Masters of Teaching program, and a School of Education faculty member, interns will develop a unit plan related to China which is suitable for secondary social studies classrooms in Pittsburgh area schools. In addition to the unit plan, interns will complete several classroom observations and reflections, co-teach three to four lessons with their MAT graduate student supervisor, and complete a portfolio detailing those teaching materials, lessons, and classroom experiences.
The PAGE program takes place each spring semester. Online applications begin August 28, 2017. View the application.
Applications are due by Monday October 9, 2017. ASC will email notifications about final decisions by Friday October 27, 2017.
If you have any questions or are interested in ASCS’s Partnership for Advancing Globalized Education, please contact Lynn Kawaratani, Acting Associate Director.
Japanese Language Boston Career Forum, 2017 (November 17-19)
The Asian Studies Center will bring 8 students to the Boston Career Forum, the world largest job fair for Japanese and English speakers. For more information about the Boston Career Fair and to register for the event, see https://careerforum.net/en/event/bos/. Students find the event most useful if they have completed a complete Japanese and English resume, and have scheduled interviews and meet and greets before the career fair.
ASC will pay for the airfare and hotel bill for the trip. Students traveling to Boston must have completed at least one year of Japanese language, be a UCIS certificate student or IDMA student, and confirm registration for the Boston Career Forum.
Preference will be given to students:
- In their final year of undergraduate work or a graduate student
- Who have achieved intermediate proficiency in Japanese
- Who are Asian Studies Certificate or IDMA students
Please complete the application here. Applications are due October 6th. Students will informed of the decision by October 9th, and must confirm attendance by October 12. Students who confirm attendance, but fail to attend will be asked to reimburse the cost of airfare.
