It also participates in a consortium with the University of Illinois, the University of Hawaii, and Michigan State University for a year of study of Japanese language and culture at Konan University in Kobe, Japan. Pitt is also an affiliate of the Institute of Asian Studies, which has semester- and year-abroad programs in Beijing, Singapore, Taipei, Nagoya, and Tokyo. In addition, through an exchange agreement with Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan, graduate and advanced undergraduate students may apply to study Japanese language and culture for one or two terms on a tuition-free basis. The Konan Program in Japan is a two-semester study abroad program at a small liberal arts college in the city of Kobe. There is a special curriculum of language and content courses designed particularly for undergraduate students from the U.S., plus many opportunities to interact with Japanese university students and experience everyday life in Japan. Located close to the thriving commercial center of Osaka as well as the ancient capitals of Kyoto and Nara, this program provides homestays for all participants, plus several field trips. At least one year of language study is required for acceptance. Scholarships are available. The Asian Studies Center administers a number of scholarships to support overseas study in Asia by qualified students.
