Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLASFs)

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships are authorized under Title VI of the Higher Education Act and are administered by the U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of the FLASF program is "to assist in the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area studies, to stimulate the attainment of foreign language acquisition and fluency, and to develop a pool of international experts to meet national needs." The FLAS Fellowship is a prestigious award that enables the recipient to devote full time to graduate study.

  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents;
  • Be admitted for graduate study in the department/school in which they will register as full-time students at the University of Pittsburgh;
  • Enroll in one language course (in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean) or language-intensive dissertation research abroad during each term of the award;
  • Enroll in at least one East Asian area course during each term of the award.

The annual competition (which opens in January) is announced via a flyer sent to all ASC graduate students, core faculty, department chairpersons, and deans.  Incoming applicants are also encouraged to apply. The FLASF provides tuition and fees for two terms and a stipend of approximately $16,000. FLASF requires a separate application, available below.  Students must be nominated by their departments.  FLASF applications are submitted to departments, not to the Asian Studies Center.  Application instructions are included on the application. Nomination deadline is Monday, February 8, 2008, but departments set their own deadlines to consider applicants for nomination.  CHECK WITH YOUR DEPARTMENT ABOUT THEIR APPLICATION DEADLINE.
