New Book from Pitt Alumna Kim Heesun
ASC is pleased to announce Kim Heesun’s new book “Contemporary Kayagum Music in Korea: Tradition, Modernity and Identity.” Kim Heesun graduated from Pitt with a Ph.D. in ethnusicology and was enrolled in our Asian Studies program. Currently she is working as a adjunct professor at Kookmin University in Seoul, Korea. Dr. Kim Heesun is a world-class artist of the Korean kayagum and performed at Pitt last November 10 as part of the KARTS Korean music ensemble from Seoul, Korea. Read reviews of the book here.
Ann Jannetta, Professor Emerita of History wins the 2009 John Whitney Hall Book Prize

Pitt's Dr. Richard Smethurst in the Asahi Shinbun and International Herald Tribune
An article by Dr. Richard Smethurst, professor of Japanese history of Pitt, was carried in the Asahi Shinbun on March 16, and the following day in the Asahi Evening News/International Herald Tribune. The first is in Japanese, the second is in English. Now you can read his article online both in English and Japanese at the following link of the Asahi Shinbun Globe.

His recent book “From Foot Soldier to Finance Minister: Takahashi Korekiyo, Japan’s Keynes” (Harvard 2007) will be translated and published in Japan in this year.

The Asian Studies Center, Film Studies Dept and the Dept. of East Asian Languages and Literatures hosted the 6th Annual Korean Film Festival. Three films, The Old Garden, Secret Sunshine and The Chaser were shown.

Asia Unreeled Film Festival with Silk Screen and Winchester Thurston
The Asian Studies Center, in collaboration with Silk Screen and Winchester Thurston, presented a new film series. Four thought-provoking and entertaining films spanning the diverse realities, histories, and cultures of Asia, with opportunities for reflection and conversation were shown. Screenings were held in the Hilda Willis Room, Upper School building, at Winchester Thurston's City Campus, 555 Morewood Avenue, in Shadyside.

Film Showing - Japanese Comedy "Happy Flight"
Japan’s All Nippon Airways and the Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania teamed up to present a viewing of the new Japanese comedy “Happy Flight” (by the director of recent popular films “Waterboys” and “Swing Girls”) on Thursday, February 5th, at 7:00 PM at Regent Square Theater in Pittsburgh.
