VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
ASC is always seeking both students at the University of Pittsburgh and community members to assist with educational outreach programs through our Student Participants Program. Students at any level of undergraduate or graduate education are welcome to apply!
Volunteers assist with programs for Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade students, as well as community activities and events. Previous Asian language study can be helpful but isn't required, and an interest in Asian culture and working with students is preferred. There are no minimum requirements for event assistant - join us once a year or once a month!
To join the ASC Student Participants Program, please contact Jennifer Murawski at jennm@pitt.edu and submit the application below:
- Download the Student Volunteer Application (Microsoft Word document)
Typical outreach volunteers assist with events such as:
- Library programs including reading series, arts and crafts activities, puppet shows, cultural talks for children
- Visiting student group programs including teaching basic Asian calligraphy and simple vocabulary, helping to coordinate programs and prepare materials, and assisting program leaders
- Assisting with musical and theatrical performances by Asian groups (ushering, equipment setup, helping performers)
- Visits to area K-12 schools to give talks on other cultures and regions of Asia
- Promoting Asian study abroad programs to university students
- Creating posters and cultural displays for use at school fairs, classroom visits, and museums
- Teaching or performing skills in Asian music, singing, dance, or arts and crafts
Volunteers who help with at least two programs in an academic year are eligible for University of Pittsburgh Book Center gift cards, recommendation letters for study abroad programs and scholarships, and more.
Interested in a community service project related to Asia? Propose your idea to us and we may be able to provide assistance and some funding!
