Biography
Dr. Richard Scaglion is the Director of the Asian Studies Center. He is also Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Research Associate at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Dr. Scaglion specializes in the Asia-Pacific region with an emphasis on Pacific Islands Studies and has conducted research for many years among the Abelam people of Papua New Guinea. His theoretical interests include human conflict and its management and the study of food and sustainable development.
Dr. Scaglion has been a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University and the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, and is an alumnus of the East-West Center in Honolulu. He is also a former Academic Dean of Semester At Sea.
He is the recipient of many teaching honors including the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award of the University of Pittsburgh.
