Proposals must be received at CIEE by February 1, 2009.
At this year’s conference, we seek to explore the role of local culture in today’s study abroad experience and examine how specific academic and cultural experiences contribute to the development of global citizens.
Istanbul, site of the 2009 CIEE conference, provides an ideal location for dialogue about: cross-cultural communication; program innovations; cultural learning and the local community; the role of language learning and, in particular, non-traditional languages in a globalized world; and cultural complexities encompassing multiple heritages, religions, and political systems.
Please bring your local and global perspectives on international education issues, including:
* From Coursework to Fieldwork: Successful Models for Learning About Culture
* Developments in Cross-Cultural Communication Theory
* Pre-Departure Advising and Cultural Learning
* Non-Traditional Language Study and its Place in the Globalized World
* Maximizing Field Trips and Site Visits
* Program Development in Non-Traditional Locations
* Facilitating Cultural Dialogues on a Local Level
* Avenues to Cultural Immersion: Volunteering, Homestays, and Internships
* Sustainability: Using Local Lessons to Address Global Issues
Submit a Session Proposal. CIEE wants your session proposals on the theme of Cultivating Culture: Local Foundations, Global Perspectives, professional development topics, or any subject of interest to the international education community. General sessions should focus on concepts, theories, issues, problems, solutions, or controversies—not on case studies or descriptions of programs at a single institution.
The standard format is a presentation given by two to four speakers, with 15 minutes of questions/audience discussion. Alternative formats, such as panel discussions, breakout/working groups, debates, and poster sessions are encouraged. Sessions are 75 minutes long. All proposals should include:
* Session title
* Session description (200–400 words)
* Chair and presenters, including institutional affiliations and contact information
* Session format and audio-visual requirements
* Proposer’s name, institution, address, telephone, fax, and email
Please email proposals to conference2009@ciee.org by February 1, 2009.
