Brackenridge Undergraduate Scholarships
Named for the founder of the University of Pittsburgh, this scholarship supports 15-25 Pitt undergraduates in the summer months for independent research projects. Each participant receives about $800 per month to assure their freedom from employment, so that the major commitment to seminar responsibilities in the summer can be assured.
Chancellor's Undergraduate Research Scholarships
Intended to support student involvement in independent research under the direction of a faculty mentor, these fellowships are offered to encourage the enrichment of the student's experience in defining objectives and selecting methodologies appropriate to original research in his/her chosen field of study. This $600 dollar award is available to 10 undergraduate students who are sponsored by and working with a full or part-time faculty member.
Chinese Summer Language Study Abroad Scholarships
These awards provide partial support for Chinese language study in an approved program in China, Taiwan or Hong Kong. They are intended primarily as summer awards. Students must be able to demonstrate competency in the Chinese language at the time of application. Preference will be given to qualified undergraduates.
Denmark International Study Program
Available to Pitt students participating in the Denmark International Study Program. Students must have a 2.75 QPA or higher. The award amounts are $2,000 for semester or full-year programs and $400 for summer programs.
Eleni Contis Study Abroad Grant
For Pitt-in-Italy participants.
European Union Center Graduate Student Summer Fellowships
For graduate students interested in WWII Europe and the European Union. The award is to fund research related to contemporary European integration. The award amount is up to $3,000 and the application deadline is mid-February.
Field Research Grants in Latin America
To enable CLAS graduate students to carry out field research directly relevant to the Latin American/Caribbean region or to Spain and Portugal in order to acquire as profound and intimate a knowledge as possible of language, culture, and geography; to gather research data; and to develop contacts with scholars and institutions in the field.
FLAS Awards for Latin American Studies
These Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowships are awarded to full--time graduate students for the purpose of assisting in the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area studies. Funded by the Department of Education, this award includes full tuition and fee payment for 2 terms (summer excluded) and an $11,000 stipend. Applicants must be nominated by the dean/chair of the school/department and may not apply directly.
FLAS Fellowships in West European Studies
Graduate students must be nominated by the deans/chairs of schools/departments that are affiliated with the Center for Western European Studies and may not apply directly. Fellowships are available for both the Summer and Academic year, and they may be used for required course work, intensive summer language study, or academic year dissertation research. Nominations should be received given by January 14, 2002 and applications are due Thursday, February 7, 2002.
Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships in Asian Studies
Funded by the U.S. Department of Education for graduate students, there are two types: Academic Year Fellowships and Summer Language Study Fellowships. Deadline is February 4, 2002.
Global Service Center Scholarships
Twenty-five scholarships, in the amount of $250, will be available based upon financial need and how well the student's overall experiences and goals match with the program's objectives. Applicants must be at least sophomore status and have a QPA of 2.75 or higher. Program locations have included Ireland, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Germany and Nepal.
IES Scholarships
A guaranteed $1500 off all IES semester and full-year programs. Also, need-based financial aid may be available. All Pitt students, by virtue of being enrolled in a public university that is an Affiliate/Associate member of the IES College Consortium, are eligible. Deadline for admission/scholarship applications is October 15 for Spring Programs and May 1 for Fall and Full-year Programs.
International Business Center Scholarship
All full-time degree-seeking undergraduate students, in the College of Business Administration or in the CAS/CBA Dual Major program, who have a 3.00 QPA or higher are eligible to apply. Scholarships are for summer, semester and full-year programs. Awards range from $500-$1,500 for each scholarship. Deadlines are May 15 (Fall and Full-year), November 1 (Spring), and March 15 (Summer).
International Studies Fund Grant Program
Intended to help Pitt students conduct research on international issues or present research in an international setting. Funds range from $500-$1,000. Full-time undergraduate and graduate students at Pitt from all Schools and Campuses are eligible. Only one award per student per fiscal year is allowed. Deadline for receiving applications is March 15.
Internship Awards for Undergraduates
The Center for Russian and East European Studies offers three internship awards each term for undergraduates to support a for-credit or no-credit internship in Russian and East European Studies. Awards are $1,000 per student per term, and require students to work at least 10 hours per week. Students must be full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students at the University of Pittsburgh and enrolled in the REES Certificate Program. The student must also have complete 2 years of REES-area language study, OR be a native speaker of Russian or an East European language.
Japanese Studies Graduate Research Development Grants
Funded through the Japan Iron and Steel Federation Endowment Fund, these grants are intended to support advanced PhD students in Japanese studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Awards will be in the range of $1,000-$2,000 and must be used in conjunction with a specific research project.
Japanese Summer Language Study Scholarship
This award for Summer 2002 provides a $2,000 tuition award to an undergraduate or graduate student for an approved program of study in the United States or Japan. Preference is given to applicants who will have completed at least one year of Japanese language study or the equivalent by the inception of the award period.
Kessler Fellowship
Open to undergraduate Oakland campus students enrolled in the West European Studies Certificate program. Student must have a minimum 3.0 QPA and be studying German.
Monterrey Summer Program Grants
Students who qualify to participate on the Intensive Spanish summer program to Monterrey Tech in Monterrey, Mexico will receive a grant covering housing and meals.
Nationality Room Scholarships
Approximately 25-30 summer study abroad scholarships ranging from $1,000-$4,000 are available to students on the Oakland campus. Students must have a QPA of 2.75 or higher, be a full-time student on the Oakland campus (graduate or undergraduate with 60-90 credits), be an American citizen or permanent resident, be on campus for 2 semesters prior to the study abroad and 2 semesters immediately following the summer experience. Minimum 5 week stay and must be earning University of Pittsburgh credit. Deadline is near the end of January.
NEH Young Scholars Award
Awards support noncredit independent undergraduate research and writing projects in one or more disciplines of the humanities during the summer months. Students may apply for $2,200, of which $400 is to be given to a faculty advisor. Applicants must be enrolled freshmen, sophomores, or juniors.
Pitt in China Scholarship
All full-time degree-seeking undergraduate students in good academic standing, who are participating in the Pitt-in-China in Beijing program are eligible to apply. Scholarships are for the summer semester and the deadline is March 15.
Pitt-Bonn Exchange Fellowship
Provides support for an academic year at Bonn University; there is no tuition charge and students are provided 9,600DM for living expenses during the ten months of coursework. Open to both graduate students and undergraduates with strong German language skills.
Provost Scholarship for Study Abroad
All full-time degree-seeking undergraduate students (Incl. Regional Campuses), who are minorities OR studying in the following Colleges/Schools: Business, General Studies, Engineering, Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Information Science, Nursing and Pharmacy, are eligible to apply. 10-$1,000 scholarships are awarded each year to qualified students, with 2.75 QPA or higher. Award is available for summer, semester and full-year programs. Deadlines are May 15 (Fall and Full-year), November 1 (Spring), and March 15 (Summer).
Research Abroad Programs
The Research Abroad Program facilitates field research abroad by faculty-undergraduate student teams working on faculty research projects. Students are not eligible to apply directly and must be selected and nominated by the applying faculty member. Eligible students should be Honors College-qualified (B+ average) and generally not graduating seniors.
Russian/East European FLAS Fellowships
Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, these Foreign Language and Area Studies awards are offered to graduate students for the Academic Year and also for Summer Language Study. Russian/East European Summer Awards
2-3 grants of $500-$1,500 are awarded yearly to support summer study or a for-credit internship for students in one of the countries of the region. Applicants must be full-time undergraduates enrolled in the Russian and East European Studies Certificate Program. Preference is given to proposals that include language training at the intermediate level or above. Deadline is mid-March.
Semester-at-Sea Scholarships
4 scholarships are awarded for each Fall and Spring voyage to Pitt students participating on the Semester-at-Sea program. Each scholarship reduces the cost of SAS to in-state tuition, and room/board at Pitt. Students must demonstrate financial need and have a 3.00 QPA or higher to apply. Deadlines for the Spring AND Fall voyage is April 1.
Study Abroad Scholarship Fund
All full-time degree-seeking undergraduate Pitt students (incl. Regional campuses) who have a 3.00 QPA or higher are eligible to apply. Available for summer, semester and full-year programs. Deadlines are May 15 (Fall and Full-year), November 1 (Spring), and March 15 (Summer).
Summer Fellowships for Intensive Study of Portuguese, an Amerindian Language, Advanced Spanish
Three National Resource Center fellowships are available to graduate students for the intensive
study of Portuguese, an Amerindian language, or advanced Spanish during the summer. To be
eligible, the study program must consist of 100 contact hours and be accredited. The fellowships
provide full tuition and fees for the course and a stipend of $2,400. These fellowships are funded
under Title VI of the U.S. Education Act; only U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible to
receive the awards.
The Year-in-Japan Scholarship
Provides a $5,000 tuition award to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated a strong interest in Japanese studies. Preference is given to applicants who will have completed at least 2 years of Japanese language study or the equivalent by the inception of the award period.
Travel to Professional Meetings
A maximum of $350 per academic year is available for CLAS faculty and students to participate in conferences.
USX Foundation & Christine Toretti Undergraduate Research Awards
Three awards of $3,000 to support a summer term of independent research and scholarship in any branch of the Humanities, Social Sciences or Natural Sciences. Any CAS undergraduate student in good academic standing, who has declared a disciplinary major, maintains a 3.25 QPA, and has a faculty sponsor in the discipline willing to be responsible for the oversight of the project is eligible.
Vira I. Heinz Scholarship for Education Abroad
This $4,000 award enables one woman per year to spend a period of time abroad during the summer.
Women's Studies Student Research Fund
Awards from $25 to $1,000 will be given to graduate and undergraduate Pitt students demonstrating a need for funds to conduct research on issues relating to women and gender. Funds may be used for travel expenses, secretarial costs, research materials or other direct costs related to research. Priority is given to students who have not received Women's Studies funding in the past and also to those enrolled in a Women's Studies Certificate Program who have made significant progress toward their certificate requirements.
