Our Mission Statement
The Confucius Institute was created to promote friendship and international exchange, as well as to enhance the understanding of the Chinese language and culture among Chinese language learners around the world. Funded by China's National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, the Confucius Institute is a non-profit public institute with a mission of promoting Chinese language and culture and supporting Chinese language instruction at local, state, and regional levels.
The Confucius Institute's programs for Chinese instruction will grow to include:
- Multimedia and web-based Chinese language teaching
- Professional training for university, secondary and elementary school Chinese teachers
- Administering the Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì (HSK) Chinese Proficiency Test, China's equivalent to the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- Conducting examinations for certification in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, as well as pre-examination training
- Non-degree corporate Chinese language training programs
- Preparation courses for study abroad in China
- Non-degree training in Chinese language for special purposes (translation, tourism, business, finance or traditional Chinese medicine)
- Promotion of Chinese degree courses at universities and colleges throughout the world, integrated with those in Chinese universities and institutes
- Assistance in formulating Chinese teaching curriculums
- Promotion of Chinese teaching materials and assistance to schools in locating and hiring Chinese language teachers
- Co-developing practical Chinese teaching materials tailored for the needs of the local community
- Academic competitions in China-related subjects at various levels of education
- Showcasing Chinese movies and TV programs through special campus programs at universities and high schools
