Confucius Institute and Saint Vincent

Web: Saint Vincent College

St. Vincent College (SVC) was established as a satellite site of the Confucius Institute at the University of Pittsburgh in May 2007. SVC is a small liberal arts college 40 miles east of Pittsburgh in Westmoreland County with approximately 1400 students. The goal of this affiliation with the Confucius Institute is to encourage and promote Chinese language and culture learning throughout our rural Westmoreland County.

In August of 2007, Dr. Yuan Zhang from Wuhan University in China joined the Chinese faculty at St. Vincent College. Dr. Zhang teaches elementary, intermediate, and advanced Chinese language classes, with over 35 students currently enrolled in the Chinese program as well as several SVC faculty and administrators.

St. Vincent College currently offers an International Studies minor in Chinese, and the Confucius Institute plans to promote development of a minor and eventually a major in Chinese Language and Literature.  In addition, the University of Pittsburgh's School of Education, together with the Modern Languages department and Chinese Studies program at St. Vincent College, are in the process of establishing a training program to establish St. Vincent College as a regional testing center for certification in teaching Chinese as a Second Language.

Besides CI-Pitt's programs at St. Vincent College, the Saint Vincent satellite center is expanding Chinese language and culture to an underserved rural community.  Two local school districts, the Latrobe Area School District and the Derry Area School District, are planning Chinese language programs based on the community's growing relationship with the Confucius Institute.
