Confucius Institute Director Michele Heryford Honored with 2011 Individual Performance of Excellence Award

At the annual Confucius Institute Conference this past December, the Confucius Institute Headquarters designated outstanding contributors in both Confucius Institute of the Year awards and Outstanding Individual Performance of Excellence Awards.  This year Michele Ferrier Heryford, director of the University of Pittsburgh Confucius Institute was honored with a Confucius Institute Individual Performance of Excellence Award for 2011.  This award was given to 31 directors from Confucius Institutes/Confucius Classrooms around the world.  Currently there are 350 Confucius Institutes and 500 Confucius Classrooms internationally. Of the 850 directors 31 received this outstanding commendation for exceptional service and leadership.  Ms. Heryford was one of nine directors in North America to be selected for the award out of 110 CI's and Confucius Classrooms.

Lisa See, a book club favorite, writes moving stories about friendship, family secrets, and forgotten history, inspired by her Chinese-American background. She returns with Dreams of Joy, following Joy, daughter of Pearl from Shanghai Girls, in a poignant depiction of life in 1957 Shanghai amidst the New Society of Red China. She also wrote the book Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.

Experience memorable literary evenings with ten of the world’s finest authors as they offer personal insights about their writing and explore the universal themes of literature from the podium at the historic Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. Confucius Institute & Asian Studies Center cordially invite you to join visiting scholar Mr. Xingyu Ma's speech on Tuesday, May 25th, 4130 Posvar Hall 2:00 p.m. Mr. Ma is the Deputy Director in the Department of Domestic Politics of the Guangming Daily newspaper in Beijing, China. Mr. Ma worked at the Department of Domestic Politics as a journalist, a director-level editor, and the Editor-in-Chief. He received several awards in China for his work as a journalist and editor. Recently, he has been doing research on news and media as a visiting scholar at the University of Pittsburgh.

2010 CI-Pitt New Teacher Orientation & Pedagogical Workshop Plan
(2009 匹大孔子学院新教师入门暨师资培训日程安排) July 15 – July 30, 2010

Through this 14-day workshop, the Chinese instructors will gain knowledge and understanding of the mission of the Confucius Institute, US cultures, teacher training and foreign languages education in the US, teaching Chinese in the US, , the US education system, particularly secondary education, high school culture, classroom management, and teaching methodology, e.g. school administration, classroom management, student and teacher interaction, as well as strategies and generic principles for effective proficiency-oriented instruction at the secondary level.  The new teachers will also learn to design a 30-minute lecture and teach the class in a peer environment.

2010 East Asian Languages Pedagogy Workshop at the University of Pittsburgh
Friday, April 9 - Saturday, April 10, 2010

Schedule

Friday, April 9th: Optional welcome reception, including dinner, in the Cloisters of the Frick Fine Arts Building, University of Pittsburgh (Oakland campus)

Saturday, April 10th: Language pedagogy workshop, including breakfast, lunch, and classroom materials fair, at Sennott Square (above Panera Bread on Forbes Avenue, entrance on South Bouquet St. side), University of Pittsburgh.

Attendees receive free parking on Pitt’s campus as well as breakfast, lunch, and free teaching materials provided by the Asian Studies Center and Confucius Institute.

All registered attendees are invited to join us for a welcome reception, including dinner and concert, on the evening of Friday, April 9th.

Program: This year’s program is geared to all levels K-12 and university, under the theme Innovation and Integration: Pathways to Success in East Asian Languages

First Annual Chinese Speech Competition at Wilson School District in Berks County

March 25th, 2010, Wilson school district’s first annual Chinese Speech Competition in Berks County was a great success. 40 candidates from 3 school districts in Berks County participated in this competition. This competition offered two levels, with 3 categories in each level. Level one included poetry, tongue twister and children song’s lyrics; and level two included poetry, tongue twister and Confucius says. After fierce competitions, 6 students received awards and prizes for their outstanding performances.

“Asia Unreeled” Documentary Film Series: The Asian Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh, in partnership with Winchester Thurston School and Silk Screen Asian Film Festival, are pleased to announce the 2010 “Asia Unreeled” Documentary Film Series, to be held Sunday, February 21th through Sunday, March 14th, 2010 at the Winchester Thurston School, located at 555 Morewood Avenue in Shadyside. This year’s lineup includes four films on South Korea, Japan, Bangladesh, and China – please join us for film and discussion about contemporary social issues in Asia!
