Cuban Film Series -- February
In conjunction with the exhibit, New Installations, Artists in Residence: Cuba, the Center for Latin American Studies and The Mattress Factory are cosponsoring a Cuban film series. Each film will have a faculty speaker to introduce the film and answer questions. The series will continue in April 2005.
The Spring Cuban
Death of a Bureaucrat, 1966 film - 87 minutes Gutiérrez Alea's first major film is a black comedy which tells the story of a young man's attempts to disinter and re-bury his uncle, a move that lands him in a nightmare of bureaucratic red tape. Throughout the film, Alea pays homage to a long tradition of film comedy from the silent classics to Billy Wilder and Luis Buñuel. Often misinterpreted, Death of a Bureaucrat is not a critique of socialism, but a critique of bureaucracy, whether it be capitalist or socialist.
Memories of Underdevelopment
An insightful portrait of a bourgeois intellectual struggling to define his role as a Cuban citizen in the wake of the revolution. This masterpiece of Third World Cinema, mixes documentary footage, still photography and narrative action to create an introspective film. Cuba, 1961. When Sergio's family departs for the U.S., he chooses to stay behind. Continually engaged in self-reflection, he grapples with his competing loyalties and changing political sensibilities. Sergio believes in the revolution but relishes the privileged lifestyle of Europe's well-born literati. He feels a tremendous void in his life which he tries to fill by having an affair with a beautiful but poor young woman. Before long, Sergio's gotten himself in trouble with the girl's family. But she's merely symbolic of the mess he's made of his life.
