Faculty Research Grants Program

CLAS Faculty Research Grants are designed to fund projects that involve research on Latin America and/or the Caribbean. The grants are designated for two purposes: (1) the provision of "seed money" or supplementary money for large projects; and (2) the provision of limited funds required for smaller projects or projects of short duration. The applicant (principal investigator) must be a "Core" or "Related" faculty member of the Center for Latin American Studies of the University of Pittsburgh. Travel to Professional Meetings

CLAS provides faculty members with travel funds to support their participation in conferences/meetings. To be eligible for the grants, faculty members must be associated with the Center for Latin American Studies, and the paper being presented or the session in which the individual is participating as organizer, discussant, or moderator must deal with the Latin American/Caribbean region. Note: Funds are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

UCIS small grant program

The UCIS Small Grant Program is designed to enable University faculty to overcome obstacles in the pursuit of their international scholarly or scientific work, by providing small grants in a speedy and flexible way. "International" is defined as relating to another country or culture, comparative analysis covering more than one country or culture, studies of international relations or of transnational activities, or studies which examine topics related to global issues. Full-time and part time tenure-stream, tenured and non tenure-stream faculty (including lecturers and contract faculty) at the University of Pittsburgh from all Schools and Departments, Centers, Institutes and Campuses are eligible to submit a proposal. Adjunct, visiting and emeritus faculty are not eligible.

Hewlett International Grant Program

The Hewlett International Grant Program is intended to help University faculty in the development or completion of international projects requiring a somewhat larger effort than available through the Small Grant Program. "International" is defined as relating to another country or culture, comparative analysis covering more than one country or culture, studies of international relations or of transnational activities, or studies which examine topics related to global issues. Full-time and part time tenure-stream, tenured and non tenure-stream faculty (including lecturers and contract faculty) at the University of Pittsburgh from all Schools and Departments, Centers, Institutes and Campuses are eligible to submit a proposal. Adjunct, visiting and emeritus faculty are not eligible.

Research Abroad Program (RAP)

RAP is intended to foster participation by undergraduate students in faculty-led research projects abroad. RAP projects will typically take place during the summer, and will be followed by joint publications and other collaborative scholarly results. Each RAP grant includes a research stipend and maintenance allowance for the lead faculty, and stipends for participating students. Full-time and part time tenure-stream, tenured and non tenure-stream faculty (including lecturers and contract faculty) at the University of Pittsburgh from all Schools and Departments, Centers, Institutes and Campuses are eligible to submit a proposal. All faculty field research projects abroad are eligible that entail four to eight weeks of summer work abroad for the undergraduate(s). Global Academic Partnership (GAP) Program

UCIS Faculty Fellowship


The purpose of the UCIS Faculty Fellowship is to enable faculty members to undertake projects or acquire skills that enhance the University’s capabilities in some branch of international studies. The Fellowship does not interrupt the accrual of terms toward a sabbatical. The Fellowship is awarded in close collaboration between UCIS, the faculty member, the relevant Department Chair, and the Dean of the relevant Faculty or School. The grant includes a limited research fund. Full-time and part time tenure-stream, tenured and non tenure-stream faculty (including lecturers and contract faculty) at the University of Pittsburgh from all Schools and Departments, Centers, Institutes and Campuses are eligible to submit a proposal. Adjunct, visiting and emeritus faculty are not eligible. Both the dean and the chair in whose unit the grantee has his or her primary appointment must support the proposal.

CRDF Small Grants Program


The Small Grants Program of the CRDF is administered by the Office of Research and the University Research Council. The primary goal of the Small Grants program is to enhance opportunities for faculty, especially junior faculty, at the University of Pittsburgh to engage in high-quality research, scholarship, and creative endeavors.  At this time, faculty in the School of Medicine are not eligible to participate in the Small Grants Program. No faculty from outside the University of Pittsburgh are eligible to participate, even as Co-Investigators. All other full-time faculty and part-time tenure-stream faculty at the Pittsburgh ( Oakland ) and regional campuses may apply.
