For one week every year, students at universities and colleges across the United States celebrate and experience the benefits of international education and exchange. Pitt actively participates in this joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. International Week is hosted by the University Center of International Studies (UCIS) and will be between October 15 and October 21, 2017. UCIS is dedicated to initiating, supporting, and coordinating international activities campus-wide. The theme of this year's International Week is "Displacement."
International Education Week is just one of the many ways that Pitt prepares students to become global citizens empowered with international knowledge, skills and experiences. Currently there are 22 million refugees in the world and an additional 40 million people who are internally displaced. The changing climate, war, persecution as well as a long history of forced migration provide a sobering opportunity for International Week to focus on displacement through multiple disciplines and perspectives.
For every student on campus, International Week offers the chance to:PURPOSE OF INTERNATIONAL WEEK?
- Gain a new cultural understanding
- Collaborate with and learn from international student groups
- Expand awareness of and interest in global issues and global learning

Beginning more than 15 years ago with a single event called the “International Fair on the Lawn,” then organized by the Study Abroad Office and the Office of International Services, the event celebrated and promoted HISTORY:
multiculturalism and study abroad opportunities at Pitt.
Pitt's University Center for International Studies saw the possibility of expanding the celebration from a single one-day event to a full week of international programs and activities. The Fair on the Lawn grew to include International Day and a variety of other events that promote the international educational opportunities at Pitt; to increase the multicultural awareness of the University population; and to celebrate the international accomplishments of both the University and the community.

in collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs.

Visiting Professor, Stone Center, Tulane University
Tulane University invites applications from mid-career scholars in Latin American Studies conducting interdisciplinary research in the social sciences to spend one or two semester(s) as a Greenleaf Scholar-in-Residence at the Stone Center for Latin American Studies during the 2018-2019 academic year. We seek scholars who address questions of social and gender inclusion, particularly with regard to the reduction of economic, environmental, health or other inequalities. We encourage applications from scholars in the fields of anthropology, development studies, economics, environmental studies, international studies, law, political science, public health, social medicine or sociology. Appointments for fall semester are from August 1 – December 31, 2018. Appointments for spring semester are from January 1– May 31, 2019. Salary is $40,000 per semester plus benefits. Travel and moving expenses are not supported.
Qualifications: Minimum Associate Professor status or above and a distinguished record of publication.

Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) Fellowships
Fostering research projects across national boundaries
Founded in 1981, the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) is a private nonprofit federation of independent overseas research centers (ORCs) that promote advanced research, particularly in the humanities and social sciences, with a focus on the conservation and recording of cultural heritage and the understanding and interpretation of modern societies. CAORC fosters research projects across national boundaries, encourages collaborative research and programmatic and administrative coherence among member centers, and works to expand their resource base and service capacity. CAORC member centers maintain a permanent presence in the host countries where they operate—in Europe, Latin America, the Near and Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, and West Africa.
The centers are the primary vehicle through which American scholars carry out research vital to our understanding of and intersection with other cultures. Some centers have existed for over a century while others were founded in the decades following World War II in response to American scholarly needs and host country invitations. Nearly four hundred American universities, colleges, and museums hold multiple memberships in the centers which serve their institutional members, individual fellows and members, and affiliated scholars through a broad range of research- and teaching-support services. Funding is awarded from sources including the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Smithsonian Institution, as well as from private foundations and individuals.
2018 Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellowship: Open to undocumented graduate students with DACA
The Ford Foundation is committed to increasing the diversity of the country’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. Their Pre-Doctoral fellowship opportunity offers an annual stipend of $24,000, expenses paid to attend at least one Conference of Ford Fellows, as well as access to Ford Fellow Regional Liaisons, a network of former Ford Fellows who have volunteered to provide mentoring and support to current fellows.
Here are the eligibility requirements:
- All U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and U.S. permanent residents (holders of a Permanent Resident Card), as well as individuals granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program, political asylees, and refugees, regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation,
- Individuals with evidence of superior academic achievement (such as grade point average, class rank, honors, or other designations),
- Individuals committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level,
- Individuals enrolled in or planning to enroll in an eligible research-based (dissertation-required), program leading to a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree at a non-proprietary (not for profit) U.S. institution of higher education,
- Individuals who as of the 2018 fall semester require a minimum of three years of study to complete their Ph.D./Sc.D. degree, and
- Individuals who have not earned a doctoral degree at any time, in any field.

Formed in 1968 in Iquitos, Peru, Los Wembler’s pioneered a unique style of music that combined cumbia rhythms, electric guitars, and psychedelic sounds. Their 1971 LP, Al Ritmo de Los Wembler’s, pushed the regional sound of chicha (cumbia rhythms combined with Andean folk melodies) to new levels. This new sound took the name cumbia amazonicá, after the first track on Al Ritmos, and it shaped andean popular music for decades. Even at their height of popularity, Los Wembler’s performed only in their hometown of Iquitos and neighboring areas, with rare performances in neighboring Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador. By the early 1980s, Los Wembler’s faded into the background as the popularity cumbia amazonicá gave way to newer electronic cumbia sounds. Los Wemblers never stopped playing, but stayed in Iquitos playing the occasional party, wedding, or community events. In the early 2000s, cumbia amazonicá was rediscovered as a missing link between traditional cumbia and a new generation of musicians in Argentina, Mexico and Colombia. In 2007, Barbès Records released Roots of Chicha: Psychedelic Cumbias from Peru and Los Wembler’s were rediscovered. In 2011, they performed in Lima for the first time in twenty-five years. A new generation of tropical electronic musicians looked to them for inspiration and the Peruvian group Dengue Dengue Dengue collaborated with them. In 2015, the Smithsonian invited Los Wembler’s to perform at the Folklife Festival in Washington DC.
Los Wembler’s haven’t lost any of their creative edge. Watching them perform or record is to witness musicians at the height of their powers. Their happy first experiments with cumbia and indigenous rhythms were not the product of chance. These are accomplished musicians in tune with their environment but also infinitely curious about the world. They may have a fondness for 1970’s production values, but after all, so do Jack White and Daptone. The style Los Wembler’s created more than forty years ago has finally found an audience around the world, and Los Wembler’s intend to keep it relevant by finding new ways to experiment.

hrough essays that question the representations of the past, its public uses, the strategies of dissemination, and the mechanisms of silencing to which they are subjected.During the 20th century, the processes of politization that had different social groups as subjects, often conflicted with the repressive mechanisms that were directly or indirectly activated by the State. This relationship between violence and resistance went on in different ways, and more recently fostered the debates on the (in)existence of archives and the ethical dillemas about the use of documents on Repression, on the claims around the so called “historical memory” or on the discussions about the figure of “victim” or “activist”. This special issue is part of the research work produced by the Ibero-American Network on Resistance and Memory (RIARM), that gathers Latin American and European researchers who focus on the study of the memories of resistance. We aim at problematizing the way in which historical knowledge tackles these “difficult pasts”, portuguese on “Memories of Resistance and Resistance of Memory”, for a special issue of the cross-disciplinary and peer-reviewed academic French journal EOLLES (Est Ouest Langues Littératures Echanges Sociétés), University of Le Havre Normandy, to be published in December 2017.

The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies Academy Scholars Program, 2018-2019
The Academy Scholars Program identifies and supports outstanding scholars at the start of their careers whose work combines disciplinary excellence in the social sciences (including law) with a command of the language, history, or culture of non-Western countries or regions.
Harvard Academy Scholarships are open only to recent PhD (or comparable professional school degree) recipients and doctoral candidates. Scholars applying by the October 1, 2017 deadline for the August 2018 postdoctoral fellowships must have completed the PhD or equivalent after September 30, 2014.
Academy Scholars are appointed for 2 years at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies and are provided time, guidance, and access to Harvard University facilities. Postdoctoral Academy Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $67,000, and predoctoral Academy Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $31,000 until they are awarded the PhD or equivalent degree.

Department of Spanish invites applications and nominations for a full-time tenure-track or tenured appointment in Latino/Latina/Latinx literature and culture that will begin in July 2018.
The appointee will be expected to teach general courses that engage a broad range of students in Latina/o/x literature and culture, and advanced courses for majors in Spanish and in Latinx and Latin American studies. Tenured Professor of Latin American Studies -MIT
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Global Studies and Languages (GSL) section invites applications for a position in contemporary Latin American Cultural Anthropology at the tenured professor level, to start in Fall 2018 (employment begins July 1, 2018). Applicants must hold a Ph.D. and have five-years’ minimum of academic teaching experience at the college or university level. Preference given to candidates with greater teaching experience and clear evidence of publication and scholarly development.
The teaching load is three courses per year, specifically, mid-tier and upper-level undergraduate courses in GSL (generally, two subjects per year conducted in Spanish, one in English). Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English is required. Portuguese also desirable.
Applicants should be trained in cultural anthropology with a specialization in contemporary Latin American Studies, and prepared to work in a multidisciplinary environment. Applicants must have significant scholarly work that is already published. MIT expects a highly productive and innovative research program as part of the requirements for tenure.
Please submit letter of application, CV, two writing samples of peer-reviewed scholarship, preferably at least one book in English, but no more than two books. Spanish language publications accepted. Experience serving as an expert source of information, with a collaborative and flexible style; developing trusting long-term relationships with constituents and creating and maintaining a team culture with a commitment to supporting teaching/research opportunities for faculty and students. Ability to work collaboratively across all levels of an organization. The candidate should be well organized, able to prioritize, have a strong attention to detail, and be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
The position requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact well with faculty, staff, and partners in Latin America. He or she will have a proven ability to work with a variety of constituents in developing and managing new projects and research and student programs.
Spanish and/or Portuguese language skills strongly preferred.
