Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLASFs)
Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships are authorized under Title VI of the Higher Education Act and are administered by the U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of the FLASF program is: "To assist in the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area studies, to stimulate the attainment of foreign language acquisition and fluency, and to develop a pool of international experts to meet national needs." The FLAS Fellowship is a prestigious award that enables the recipient to devote full time to graduate study. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents; be admitted for graduate study in the department/school in which they will register as full-time students at the University of Pittsburgh; enroll in one language course (in Portuguese, Quechua, Aymara, or Spanish) during each term of the award; and enroll in at least one Latin American area course during each term of the award. The annual competition (which opens in January) is announced via a flyer sent to all CLAS graduate students, core faculty, department chairpersons, and deans. The FLASF provides tuition and fees for two terms and a stipend ($16,000 in 2008-09).

Latin American Social and Public Policy Fellowships (LASPPFs)
Latin American Social and Public Policy Fellowships are designed to assist students interested in various dimensions of social and public policy in Latin America to pursue graduate studies on this topic in a department or professional school of the University of Pittsburgh. Applicants should have a superior academic record; be admitted to full-time graduate study in an academic department at the University of Pittsburgh to study some aspect of social and public policy; commit themselves to completing the Graduate Certificate in Latin American Social and Public Policy; be fluent in Spanish or Portuguese and English. The LASPPF provides full tuition for the fall and spring terms; stipend for eight months; medical insurance for full year; and a supply/research allowance. Fellowships in Latin American Archaeology
Latin American Archaeology Fellowships are designed to support outstanding graduate students from Latin America and North America who concentrate on Latin American archaeology in their studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Applicants should have a superior academic record; be admitted to full-time graduate study in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh; and be fluent in Spanish or Portuguese and English. Fellowships provide full tuition and a monthly stipend for the fall, spring, and summer terms and a monthly book allowance. Applicants must apply to the Department of Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh. Fellowship recipients are selected by faculty of the Latin American Archaeology Program. Summer Fellowships for the Intensive Study of Portuguese, an Amerindian Language, or Advanced Spanish
Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships are available to graduate students for the intensive study of Portuguese, an Amerindian language, or advanced Spanish during the summer. The fellowships provide full tuition and fees for the course (maximum of $4,000) and a stipend of $2,500. These fellowships are funded under Title VI of the U.S. Education Act; only U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible to receive the awards. Tuition Remission Fellowships (TRFs)
CLAS has a limited amount of funds available for TRFs. TRFs pay partial or a full term's tuition only. TRFs are awarded according to the following priorities:
(1) Students from Latin America sponsored by LASPAU or IIE.

LASPAU: Academic and Professional Programs for the America Fellowships for Latin American citizens (resident at the time of application) to study in U.S. universities. Candidates for these fellowships are nominated by their Latin American university. Transportation and maintenance are provided by LASPAU; tuition is provided by CLAS. IIE: Institute of International Education The same requirements and financing as described in the preceding paragraph for LASPAU pertain to fellowships available through IIE. (2) Students presented as official candidates by universities in Latin America that have exchange agreements with CLAS. For more information on CLAS agreement please contact Luis Bravo.
(3) Any remaining balance is awarded to students currently enrolled in CLAS; who demonstrate progress towards completing a CLAS certificate; who maintain a 3.0 QPA. (Note: First-term students are ineligible for TRFs; please apply after grades for the first term have been received.) CLAS Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship
The Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship offers undergraduates the opportunity to enrich their educational experience, enhance their resumé, and receive a cash award of $750. The fellowship is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate (currently enrolled in Latin American Studies) to assist a professor in teaching a Latin American course and is generally available each term. To apply, the student and the CLAS faculty member must present the following documents:

Nomination of a student for the award should be done by the faculty member in a maximum of three pages and should include: (a) how the student will participate in the course and; (b) how the student’s involvement is expected to contribute to implementation of teaching innovation otherwise not possible without the time commitment of an assistant.

The student should submit a statement (three-page maximum) defining his/her own goals in the course;

The student should submit an up-to-date transcript (an unofficial copy is acceptable);

ONE letter of recommendation of the student's qualifications to serve as a teaching fellow should be submitted by a faculty member other than the sponsor;

The student's name, local and home addresses, phone numbers, e-mail address, and social security number should be included in the application.

CLAS Seminar and Field Trip Teaching Assistantship
The position of Teaching Assistant (TA) for the Undergraduate Seminar & Field Trip to Fortaleza, Brazil in the Spring Term and Summer Session of 2009 is now open. The TA will assist Prof. Ana Paula Carvalho, Project Director for 2009, with the undergraduate interdisciplinary seminar in the Spring Term (January through April) and accompany the group to Brazil in the Summer Session (approximately May 12-June 21).
