Description:


The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) will offer an intensive program in Brazilian Portuguese at the University of Pittsburgh campus in the summer of 2008. This six-week program provides beginning students with the equivalent of a full first year of Portuguese language training. Six credits will be awarded upon successful completion. Classes will be conversationally oriented; however, reading and writing skills also will be developed.


Classes meet Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm (May 12-June 21, 2008). At least five additional hours of Portuguese language instruction will be conducted as a field class in the evenings or on weekends. (Total contact hours=140+) Films and informal activities will provide additional language practice.


The instructors, Dr. Bobby J. Chamberlain, is a specialist on the Portuguese language and literature of Brazil, and Lecturer Ana Paula Carvalho, native Fortalezan, instructor, and Coordinator of the Portuguese Minor, in the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures.

Admission and Registration:


Participants may register for Portuguese 0005 (undergraduates) or 1005 (upper level undergraduates and graduate students). Graduate students must register for Portuguese 1005. Enrollment will be limited to assure each participant maximum attention.


Those who are not enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh should request a visiting student application. The application fee is $45. Costs:


The cost of tuition for visiting students and undergraduates enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh will be $3024 for Pennsylvania residents and $5400 for nonresidents. Tuition for graduate students at Pitt will be $3624 for Pennsylvania residents and $6618 for nonresidents. Fees for undergraduates will be $189 and for graduate students $175.


On-campus housing (single occupancy) is available for approximately $1100 for the six weeks. If desired, a meal plan may be purchased for use on and off campus at participating eateries. Fellowships:


Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLASF) funded by the U.S. Department of Education are available from the University of Pittsburgh. The fellowships cover the full cost of tuition, fees, and provide $2,400 for maintenance. Funded under Title VI of the U.S. Education Act, only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply. These fellowships are also restricted to students enrolled for graduate study at an accredited college or university in the U.S.. For more information, please click here


Pittsburgh and its consortium partner, the Latin American Studies Program of Cornell University, both offer FLASF fellowships. They may be used for the intensive study of Portuguese, Quechua (or any other Amerindian language of Latin America) or advanced Spanish.

Location:


The University of Pittsburgh campus is located in the heart of the city. Within walking distance are galleries, museums, libraries, and a conservatory. The 500-acre Schenley Park, adjacent to the main campus, has facilities for bicycling, golf, tennis, and picnics. Public transportation in Pittsburgh is readily available to the downtown cultural center.
