Travel to Professional Meetings

The maximum amount of a CLAS Travel to Professional Meeting grant is $350. To be eligible for the grants, faculty members and students must be associated with the Center for Latin American Studies, and the paper being presented or the session in which the individual is participating as organizer, discussant, or moderator must deal with the Latin American/Caribbean region. Faculty members and students can receive up to $350 each academic year. Students can receive a maximum of three such grants during their course of studies at the University.

Important Points:

  • Funding is limited and grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Therefore, if you do not submit your application early in the academic year, you may not receive funds. Funding for travel to professional meetings that take place between September 2006 and August 2007 should be requested no later than May 1, 2007. In general, you should apply for funding as soon as you have confirmation that you will be participating in a meeting/conference.
  • The funds can be used to pay for airline tickets for travel within the United States. They cannot, however, be used to pay for international airfare.
  • The funds can be used to cover food, lodging, and incidental expenses (that is, per diem expenses) related to participation in a meeting/conference any where in the world.
  • If you request the funds as a travel advance for travel within the United States, you may not be able to receive the maximum amount as an advance. For travel within the U.S., you can receive only $100 (total) for lodging, plus the allowable M & IE (Meals and Incidental Expenses) rate for the number of days you will be traveling. You can receive any remaining funds after returning and submitting your expense receipts.
  • If you request the funds as a travel advance for international travel, you can receive the maximum allowable per diem rate (Lodging and M & IE [Meals and Incidental Expenses]) for the number of days you will be traveling. Generally, this will exceed the maximum amount of the grant.
  • You are required to submit a form with your application. Click here for a Student Form.
  • You will need a copy of the letter confirming that your application has been approved before you can claim the funds. (You should receive the letter within a week after submitting your application).
  • If you want to receive a travel advance, you must request the funds (that is, submit your confirmation letter) at least 10 working days prior to your departure date.
