FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR REES STUDENTS
Undergraduate Students. REES annually grants Summer Study Abroad Awards and Undergraduate Internship Awards on a competitive basis to Pitt students who are enrolled in the REES Undergraduate Certificate Program. These awards fund either study abroad or summer internships located in the REES world region, or internships in the field of Russian and East European Studies located in Pittsburgh during the academic year. Assistance is available with finding internship placements.
Other scholarships, loans, and work-study programs for Pitt undergraduates are administered by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. Work-study positions assisting REES staff with office work are periodically available during the academic year. If you are eligible to receive a work-study award and are interested in such a position, please contact Eileen O'Malley.
Graduate Students. A number of sources of financial assistance are available for graduate students in Russian and East European Studies. These include:
- Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships, awarded by REES with funding from the US Department of Education, provide full graduate tuition and a living stipend. Only US citizens and permanent residents are eligible to receive FLAS Fellowships. To apply for Academic Year FLAS, you must submit a FLAS application to the department or professional school in which you are currently enrolled or to which you are seeking admission. FLAS awards are also available for summer language study; please contact the REES graduate advisor for further information.
- Tuition Remission Fellowships are awarded by REES on a competitive basis.
- Departmental Fellowships and Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis by the School of Arts and Sciences departments or the University's professional schools; these provide tuition remission and a stipend. Graduate assistantships also are periodically available in the REES office. If you are interested in applying, please contact Gina Peirce.
- Nationality Rooms Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis; three scholarships per year are awarded for field work in the recipients' country of choice, and three are awarded for field work in the Czech or Slovak Republic, Hungary, or Ukraine.
- Andrew Mellon Pre-doctoral Fellowships are awarded by the School of Arts and Sciences on a competitive basis.
- Provost Development Fund Scholarships (for women and minorities, advanced doctoral work, or new study programs) are administered by the Provost's Office.
- Owens Fellowships, loans, and work-study programs are administered by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid.
- External fellowships supporting graduate research on the region include those of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (Fulbright), the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX), The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), and the National Security Education Program (NSEP).
