A number of sources of financial assistance are available for graduate students in Russian and East European Studies.
These include:
- Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships, awarded by REES with funding from the US Department of Education, provide full graduate tuition and a living stipend. Only US citizens and permanent residents are eligible to receive FLAS Fellowships. To apply for Academic Year FLAS, you must submit a FLAS application to the department or professional school in which you are currently enrolled or to which you are seeking admission. FLAS awards are also available for summer language study; please contact the REES graduate advisor for further information.
- Tuition Remission Fellowships are awarded by REES on a competitive basis.
- Departmental Fellowships and Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis by the FAS departments or the University's professional schools; these provide tuition remission and a stipend.
- Nationality Rooms Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis; three scholarships per year are awarded for field work in the recipients' country of choice; and three are awarded for field work in the Czech or Slovak republics, Hungary, or Ukraine.
- Andrew Mellon Pre-doctoral Fellowships are awarded by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on a competitive basis.
- Provost Development Fund Scholarships (for women and minorities, advanced doctoral work, or new study programs) are administered by the Provost's Office.
- Owens Fellowships, loans, and work-study programs are administered by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid.
- External fellowships supporting graduate research on the region include those of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (Fulbright), the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX), the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), and the National Security Education Program (NSEP).
