Graduate students who seek a regional and intellectual focus on Russia, the former USSR, or Eastern Europe to complement their disciplinary or professional degree can find additional academic and financial resources through REES. While working toward one of the center's Graduate Certificates, students can participate in a rich variety of extracurricular activities, including student-faculty discussion groups, overseas projects, research conferences, REES' own graduate student association, and student clubs focusing on language and culture.
The Graduate Certificate (in Russian, Soviet, or East European Studies) is awarded after completion of all requirements for the MA degree or successful performance on the comprehensive examinations for the doctoral degree in the student's department or professional school. Specific certification requirements are:
- Six REES-related courses (18 credits), of which at least four are in two or more departments other than that of the student's major discipline;
- Demonstration of proficiency in a language of the former Soviet Union or East/Central Europe equivalent to three years of study at the college level; and
- A substantial research paper based on primary source materials in the language(s) of the area. (This paper may also be used to fulfill degree requirements.)
Among the MA or PhD programs commonly combined with a REES Graduate Certificate are those in anthropology, economics, history, linguistics, political science, psychology, religious studies, Slavic languages and literatures, sociology, the arts (including film and theatre), and GSPIA (the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs).
An MA in Russian and East European Studies in combination with an MBA from the Katz Graduate School of Business is also available. Students must be accepted into both the MBA program and graduate studies in the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS). The requirements for this joint degree include the equivalent of three years of instruction in a relevant foreign language, a research paper, and 24 credits in REES courses offered by SAS. Finally, a joint certificate in Russian, Soviet, or East European Studies and International and Comparative Law is offered to students in the School of Law. Requirements include 19-20 credits in international and comparative law courses, along with the REES Graduate Certificate program requirements.
Admission. Application for admission to graduate study at the University of Pittsburgh is made directly to the academic department or graduate professional school of the student's choice. For those wishing to pursue a Graduate Certificate, applications should be accompanied by a separate statement requesting admission to the REES Certificate program. Further information is available from REES.
