REES Courses

Financial Aid
The Graduate Certificate (in Russian, Soviet, or East European Studies) is awarded after completion of all requirements for the MA degree or successful performance on the comprehensive examinations for the doctoral degree in the student's department or professional school.
Among the MA or PhD programs commonly combined with a REES Graduate Certificate are those in
anthropology,
economics,
history,
linguistics,
political science,
psychology,
religious studies,
Slavic languages and literatures,
sociology,
the arts (including film and
theatre), and
GSPIA (the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs).
- Six REES-related courses (18 credits), of which at least four are in two or more departments other than that of the student's major discipline;
- Demonstration of proficiency in a language of the former Soviet Union or East/Central Europe equivalent to three years of study at the college level; and
- A substantial research paper based on primary source materials in the language(s) of the area. (This paper may also be used to fulfill degree
requirements.)
Application for admission to graduate study at the University of Pittsburgh is made directly to the academic department or graduate professional school of the student's choice. For those wishing to pursue a Graduate Certificate, applications should be accompanied by a separate statement requesting admission to the REES Certificate program. Further information is available from REES.
A number of sources of financial aid are available for graduate students in Russian and East European Studies.
