The site includes details of our Archaeology Volunteer scheme for 2002.  We are offering non-specialists the opportunity to join our excavations at the spectacular sites of Kazakl'i-yatkan and Tash-k'irman-tepe in western Uzbekistan, followed by a tour of the Silk Road cities of Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand.

Assistant Professor in Modern History of Central Asia

University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (MI, U.S.A.)

Pending approval, the Department of History and the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in the modern history of Central Asia.
The successful candidate will teach a variety of introductory survey courses on the history and culture of Central Asia from the post-Mongol period (16th century) up to the collapse of the former Soviet Union and the creation of newly independent Central Asian states. He/she will participate in the teaching of introductory to upper-level courses on the comparative history of Eurasian empires and on modern and current religious and ethnic movements and conflicts in the area. The appointee will also teach graduate seminars on his/her field of specialization and train and guide graduate students specializing in the modern history and anthropology of the area.

Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated proficiency in at least two languages of the area and first-hand knowledge of its societies, cultures, archives and academic institutions. Knowledge of Russian and/or Chinese will be an advantage. Candidates from disciplinary fields other than history (e.g., anthropology, sociology and political science) will also be considered as long as their work includes a clear historical dimension.

Assistant Professor, Russian Language (tenure track)

The Department of Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African Languages invites applications for a tenure system position at the assistant professor level in Russian language or literature/culture with the particular area of specialty open.

Ph.D., native/near-native knowledge of Russian and English, and college level teaching experience required. Strong background in and commitment to communicative foreign language teaching and program development, ability to utilize technology, experience with innovative approaches to teaching, and cross-disciplinary interests highly desirable.

The department expects the candidate to be able to teach interdisciplinary culture courses that contribute to the department's service in general education, as well as language courses and literature courses at all levels. A second specialization in another Slavic language or culture is highly desirable. The average course load is four courses per academic year.

The position will assist in the development and implementation of a concrete plan of action.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Provide IREX with regular updates of: Congressional trends and priorities, budgetary decisions and implications, hearings and briefings of interest, changes to members' committee assignments or staff, etc.
  • Request frequent informational meetings with Congressional members and their staff, as well as members of the Administration.
  • Draft a comprehensive communications strategy in coordination with IREX staff. · Invite members and their staff to IREX events including suggesting invitees, drafting and delivering invitations, and securing Hill rooms for events.
  • Help coordinate targeted mailings of IREX promotional materials.
  • Assist IREX in improving relations with the media, including drafting op-eds.
  • Provide a monthly report of consulting services performed.
  • Perform other outreach tasks as appropriate and assigned by the Director of Development.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must be extremely well organized, able to work independently, skilled at handling multiple tasks, and able to adhere to deadlines. Other specific qualifications should include at a minimum:

  • Demonstrated connections to members of Congress and their staff, members of the Administration and their staff, and the media.
  • Knowledge of Congressional procedures, especially the budget cycle.
  • Superior interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with international issues, especially in Central and Eastern Europe and the New Independent States, highly desirable.
