Pitt Project GO offers academic year Russian language training opportunities to students located in the Pittsburgh area; students located in the Birmingham, Alabama area; and students located at other colleges and universities throughout the US. For further information about these exciting programs, please contact Gina Peirce (gbpeirce@pitt.edu).
Pitt’s Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures offers specially tailored hybrid Russian language courses, which combine evening course meetings with online content to fit ROTC students’ demanding schedules. The department also offers four levels of Russian language training in traditional course formats each academic year, plus a variety of literature and culture courses. Students from Pittsburgh-area colleges and universities other than Pitt can cross-register for these courses through the Pennsylvania Council on Higher Education (PCHE) program.
Starting in fall of 2013, the University of Pittsburgh, in cooperation with Samford University, will offer a hybrid intermediate-level Russian language course sequence at Samford to all students in the Birmingham, Alabama area through the Birmingham Area Consortium for Higher Education (BACHE) program. Course content and format will be identical to those of the hybrid courses described above with the exception that the evening course meetings will be videoconferenced from the University of Pittsburgh, thus allowing Birmingham-area students to participate in a live classroom with a Pitt instructor and students. Because the hybrid courses are specially designed to fit the three-level sequence for Pitt Project GO fellowship recipients, this innovative offering will give Birmingham-area ROTC cadets the same access to these highly attractive scholarship options as their course mates in Pittsburgh.
Starting in fall of 2013, ROTC students from colleges and universities at other locations throughout the US will be able to complete an online intermediate-level Russian course sequence through intensive use of the Carnegie Speech Company’s interactive web-based SpeakRussian software. To complement the extensive speaking, listening, and reading practice provided by SpeakRussian, the online intermediate course option will also include a writing assignment component. A Russian instructor at Pitt will monitor all aspects of students’ online coursework, working individually with each student to identify and overcome their specific weaknesses. Because the online course option is specially designed to fit the three-level sequence for Pitt Project GO fellowship recipients, this innovative offering will give ROTC cadets from across the country the same access to these highly attractive scholarship options as their counterparts in Pittsburgh and Birmingham.
