Summer Study Abroad/Internship Awards for Undergraduates

This year REES will again offer funding for Pitt undergraduates to support study or a for-credit internship in East/Central Europe or the countries of the former Soviet Union. Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis. Students may combine REES awards with study-abroad funding from sources internal or external to the University. Preference will be given to applicants whose projects include language training along with the study program or internship abroad.

Eligibility
All applicants must be degree-seeking undergraduates at the University of Pittsburgh, and must be enrolled in the Russian and East European Studies Certificate Program.

Application
The deadline for summer 2006 awards is Wednesday, March 1, 2006. Applicants who make the "short list" will be interviewed by the selection committee. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the Center for Russian and East European Studies receives the following materials by the deadline:

1. application form (also available in REES office);

2. official transcripts of all college or university academic work;

3. letter of admission (if available)* from the study-abroad program of choice with accompanying program information, OR a completed Sponsor's Registration form (from Academic Internships-Office of Experiential Learning, B 4 Thaw Hall) – only if applying for an internship;

4. two letters of recommendation;

5. Student Aid Report (a copy of your most recent SAR is available at the Financial Aid Office); and

6. one-page, typed statement of personal, academic and career goals that specifies how the award would be spent. The selection committee needs to understand how your proposed activities abroad relate to your course of study at Pitt as well as your future goals.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Notification/Cancellation
Students will receive a letter at their current mailing address notifying them of the outcome of their application. If for any reason a grant recipient does not participate in the study abroad or internship program for which the award was made, the full amount of the award must be returned to REES immediately.

Questions?
Contact Nadia Kirkov (648-7418) at the REES office (4415 Posvar Hall).

* Students should have applied to the study-abroad program of their choice before applying for this award, but it is not necessary to have been accepted into a program prior to this competition's deadline.
