 Undergraduate Certificate Program

Russian and East European Studies offers students a stimulating interdisciplinary program providing an understanding of the history and culture of the nations of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, as well as the critical political and economic transitions taking place in this region of the world.

Students in any major who wish to add a Russian, East European, or Central European focus to their regular undergraduate degree can enroll in the REES Certificate program. This additional academic credential combines foreign language training and multidisciplinary area studies courses but does not usually increase students' overall course load. Certificate courses can be used simultaneously to fulfill students' general education and international/foreign culture requirements. The Undergraduate Certificate requirements are:

    1. Four REES-related courses (12 credits) in at least two departments other than the student's major department (or five courses in at least three departments if no REES-related courses are available in the student's major);

    2. One REES-related course (3 credits) in the student's major department, if available;

    3. Two years of college-level study in a language of the former Soviet Union or East/Central Europe, or demonstration of equivalent proficiency; and

    4. Minimum GPA of 3.0 in REES-related courses.

Center advisors assist in selecting courses, language training, and arranging internships or study abroad to fit students' academic and personal interests. REES offers a special "cap" or exit seminar for seniors in the REES certificate program. Upon graduation, both the academic degree and the "Certificate in Russian and East European Studies" are posted on students' transcripts.

Admission to the University is sought through the School of Arts and Sciences or College of General Studies Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. Application to the Certificate program is made once the student is in residence. In order to obtain the REES Certificate, the student must visit the REES office and apply directly to the program. Although any time is acceptable, it is highly recommended that this be done during the freshman or sophomore year. Before graduation, the student must complete a special application for the REES Certificate and obtain the REES advisor's signature. Application forms and further information may be obtained from REES.

Paid internships, study abroad scholarships, and other sources of financial aid are available for qualified undergraduates.
