Undergraduate Certificate Program

Students in any major who wish to add a Russian, East European, or Central European focus to their regular undergraduate degree can enroll in the REES Certificate program. This additional academic credential combines foreign language training and multidisciplinary area studies courses but does not usually increase students' overall course load. Certificate courses can be used simultaneously to fulfill students' general education and international/foreign culture requirements.

Certificate Requirements:
    1. Five REES-related area studies (non-language) courses (15 credits) in at least three departments, including up to two courses in the student’s major department (if available), with the remaining courses in at least two departments other than the student's major department

    2. Two years of college-level study in a language of the former Soviet Union or East/Central Europe, or demonstration of equivalent proficiency

    3. Capstone project of at least 10 double-spaced pages on a topic related to the REES world area (required only for students who enroll in the REES Certificate program in Fall 2011 or later)

    4. Minimum GPA of 3.0 in REES-related courses.

REES Undergraduate Advisor Susan Hicks will assist in selecting courses, language training, and arranging internships or study abroad to fit students' academic and personal interests. Upon graduation, both the academic degree and the "Certificate in Russian and East European Studies" are posted on students' transcripts.

Admission

Admission to the University is sought through the School of Arts and Sciences or College of General Studies Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. Application to the Certificate program is made once the student is in residence. In order to obtain the REES Certificate, the student must visit the REES office and apply directly to the program. Although any time is acceptable, it is highly recommended that this be done during the freshman or sophomore year. Before graduation, the student must complete a special application for the REES Certificate and obtain the REES advisor's signature. Application forms and further information may be obtained from REES.
