  Life of Monuments Film Notes

Life of Monuments begins with shots of the repression of Polish Solidarity in Warsaw. The filmmaker moves back and forth among three different moments in history.

  • The repression of Solidarity.
  • The ceremonial unveiling of the Dzerzhinsky statue in the late 1950s or 1960. (Feliks Dzerzhinsky was a Polish Communist and the founder of the Soviet Checka, the forerunner of the KGB)
  • The toppling of the Dzerzhinsky statue in 1990.

Discussion Questions:

1. How do the two main scenes compare to each other in terms of organization? In terms of people's expressions and emotions?

2. What effect does the film director achieve in this short? What point is he trying to make about Polish history? About the significance of statues and monuments? Would you favor leaving the statue standing, or taking it down?
