Andrea Aldrich

Andrea Aldrich, PhD Candidate in Political Science and Center Graduate Certificate Awardee in both West European and EU Studies, received the 2013 Ernst Haas Award for Dissertation Research from the European Union Studies Association at their national meeting in Baltimore in May.  Hers was one of only two such awards given in a national competition.

With support from this award, Aldrich will spend time in Brussels interviewing members of the EU Parliament.  She will focus on candidate selection within national parties for European Parliament elections and communication/supervision structures between members of Parliament and their national party leadership.

She plans a five-week trip which will also be supported by a George S. Klinzing Graduate Research Award given to her by the EUCE/ESC.  Her research builds on the work that she did for her 2012 Fulbright fellowship in Croatia.  That award allowed her to interview members of the Croatian Democratic Union (Hrvatska demokratska zajednica (HDZ)) and Social Democratic Party (Socijaldemokratska partija (SDP)) about the preparation for EU entry—scheduled for July 1, 2013.

About her work interviewing both members of the EU Parliament and national parties, the Ely, Minnesota native noted that, “Most of the politicians I have spoken with have been open and frank about their work and their parties and really allowed me to learn about how the relationship between the EP and national parties works.”

She also said of her fieldwork experience that, “It's been both challenging and fun and a once and a lifetime opportunity.”

Julie Draper Tremeryn

Julie Draper Tremeryn, a Pitt MFA Alumna who served as the Center’s Newsletter Editor from 2008-2012, was recently awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for the Academic Year 2013-14.

Tremeryn will be staying in Ljubljana, Slovenia during the course of her fellowship.  While there she will travel to the village where her great-grandmother lived to research the experiences of migration of women in the Posavje region-both those who left and those who stayed behind.  The research will culminate in a novel tentatively titled "Iron Road: A Novel of Slovenian-American Migration".

Jessica Kuntz

Jessica Kuntz, entering her second year of study at GISPIA and an EU Studies Graduate Certificate student with the Center, has been awarded a Boren Fellowship.  Kuntz, a previous Fulbright Fellow, will spend her fellowship year in Bosnia in intensive Bosnian language study and developing her proposed project, “The Use of Public Goods to Defuse Economic Instability in Bosnia Herzegovina.”
