EUCE FACULTY FELLOWSHIP, Spring 2008 (2084)

The European Union Center of Excellence (EUCE) is calling for proposals for its Faculty Fellowship Program for faculty in Business, Law, or Public and International Affairs.  One Faculty Fellowship for one semester to be taken during the Spring of AY 2008 (2084) is available.  The purpose of the Fellowship is to enable faculty members to undertake research projects that enhance the University’s capabilities in some branch of European Union studies.  Since the purpose of the EUCE Faculty Fellowship is to benefit the institution’s priorities, the Fellowship does not interrupt the accrual of terms toward a sabbatical.  The Fellowship is awarded in close collaboration among the EUCE, the faculty member, the relevant Department Chair, and the Dean of the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, the Law School, or the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA.)  The grant includes a limited research fund.  The deadline for submitting a completed application is Monday, March 12, 2007.

The proposed research should address EU policies, politics, law, economics, business, external or transatlantic relations.  The research should lead to publications that are accessible to practitioners as well as publications targeted at the scholarly community.  The interest of practitioners in the proposed research will be taken into consideration by the awards committee.  Research that could be related to a “policy conference” attended by practitioners as well as scholars would be favorably viewed.

Eligibility

Full-time tenure-stream and tenured faculty at the University of Pittsburgh from either the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, the Law School, or the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs are eligible to submit a proposal.  Adjunct, visiting and emeritus faculty, non tenure-stream faculty (lecturers and contract faculty), and students are not eligible. The dean of the school of the applicant’s primary appointment must support the proposal.

Funding Priorities

Proposals must demonstrate a significant impact on the international academic reputation of the EUCE.

Examples of Supported Projects

    1. Preparation of scholarly journal articles or a book-length manuscript
    2. Publication of an edited volume

Amount of Grant

The EUCE Faculty Fellowship is jointly funded by UCIS and the faculty member’s School or Department. UCIS provides replacement costs for the faculty and provides a limited research fund for use during the Faculty Fellowship.  The amount of the award for replacement cost is individually negotiable between the Director of UCIS and the dean of the school of the applicant’s primary appointment. The amount of the research fund is $2,000. The EUCE Faculty Fellowship is awarded for one semester.
