Faculty Funding Opportunities
European Grants Competition
The European Studies Center offers full-time faculty an opportunity to apply for a grant for research on Europe not focused on the European Union. The competition is open to full-time faculty affiliated with the European Union Center of Excellence and European Studies Center. The competition will award grants for research-related activities to be carried out during the academic year, although the end date of the activity is negotiable.
The Center supports research projects on Europe with awards ranging from $500 to $1,500. Awards are intended to supplement other research funds and not intended to be the sole source of funding. Preference will be given to projects for which funding is also being sought from external sources. For activities or disciplines for which external funding is not available or very scarce, the Center expects applicants to also request funding from the department or another office/center at the University of Pittsburgh.
Under requirements of the University Center for International Studies, all applicants must gain IRB clearance or exemption before awards may be given. The Faculty European Grant Competition Application includes a box that you must complete and sign. The relevant university regulation reads as follows:"All research involving interventions or interactions with individuals or the collection of identifiable private information concerning living individuals requires prospective Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval. Grantees are responsible for obtaining IRB approval when required, and must provide documentation of IRB approval before a grant can be awarded. For further information, check the IRB web site at www.irb.pitt.edu."
Application Procedure
To apply, please complete the Faculty European Grant Competition Application Form. Include a written proposal of the project for which you are requesting funding, a current c.v., and a detailed estimated budget that justifies the amount of the request.
The deadline for the 2008-2009 competition is December 5, 2008. A selection committee consisting of European Union Center of Excellence and European Studies Center affiliated faculty will meet shortly after the deadline. The committee’s selections will be announced as soon as possible after the selection committee meeting.
