Opportunities in Germany
Grant Program for Faculty Research or Teaching in Germany
Historical and contemporary developments involving education, society, domestic politics, and the international relations of Germany are a special focus of the EUCE/ESC. With the support of the University Center for International Studies (UCIS), EUCE/ESC administers a grant program to help faculty carry out individual or collaborative research or teaching in Germany.
Faculy are encouraged to submit porposals devoted to projects in and about Germany. Faculty whose focus is not currently Germany but who are interested in adding this dimension to their research or teaching are encouraged to apply. Proposals can involve individual or collaborative research projects or to support visits--including for teaching-- between faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and faculty or researchers at German institutions. Of particular interests are projects involving faculty and graduate students at collaborating institutions and those projects likely to lead to applications for external grant funding and/or publication.
There is no fixed deadline for applications but proposals should be submitted early enough to allow the project to start during the current academic year. Grants awarded typically range between $3,000 and $8,000.
Full-time and part-time tenure-stream, tenured and non tenure-stream faculty (including lecturers and contract faculty) at the University of Pittsburgh from all schools, centers, and campuses are eligible to submit a proposal. Adjunct and visiting faculty are not eligible.
To apply, please complete the Application for Faculty Research or Teaching in Germany (Application Form) Include with the application an estimated budget detailing all expected costs and specifying the amount requested from EUCE/ESC. Faculty applying for research should include a description of the project of no more than five pages. People applying for teaching time should provide a description of the course(s) to be taught, syllabi if available, and a copy of the invitation from the institution(s) where the course(s) will be taught. Please also include a current curriculum vitae.
Under requirements of the University of Pittsburgh, all applicants must gain Institutional Review Board (IRB) clearance or exemption before awards may be given. Grantees are responsible for obtaining IRB approval or exemption, and must provide documentation of IRB approval before a grant can be awarded. For further information, see http://www.irb.pitt.edu/.
Grantees will be asked to submit a final report explaining the use of the funds and the outcomes of the supported activity. They may also be asked to write a short article for the EUCE/ESC newsletter.
