Model NATO 2008

The University of Pittsburgh’s Model NATO conference is the second such simulation in the United States and the only one held outside of Washington, DC. The conference is a simulation of a North Atlantic Council (NAC) meeting. Undergraduate students play the role of national ambassadors to NATO from one or more of the 26 member states, and they work to resolve issues facing the Alliance. Major agenda topics addressed at the conference may include NATO-EU relations/cooperation, NATO enlargement, NATO’s role in Iraq, the NATO response force, National Missile Defense and Theater Missile Defense, among others. The conference, which brings together students from Pennsylvania and across the United States, gives the students a real sense of the challenges involved in the decision-making process of the Alliance.

The Model NATO is sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh’s European Studies Center/European Union Center of Excellence under the leadership of Dr. Alberta Sbragia, Director and Professor of Political Science. Past participating colleges and universities have included University of Pittsburgh, Oakland campus; University of Pittsburgh, Johnstown campus; Washington and Jefferson College; United States Naval Academy; Centenary College.
