American Foreign Policy Council (AFPC) Internships

Founded in 1982, AFPC is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing information to those who make or influence the foreign policy of the United States and to assisting world leaders, particularly in the former USSR, with building democracies and market economies. AFPC is widely recognized as a source of timely, insightful analysis on issues of foreign policy, and works closely with members of Congress, the Executive Branch and the policymaking community. The AFPC offers internship positions year round in its Washington, DC office. Hours are flexible with interns expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Arms Control Association Internships

The Arms Control Association is looking for individuals to fill a limited number of intern positions with stipends. Interns are involved in many facets of ACA's work including: researching arms control and security issues for articles and fact sheets; assisting in preparing and editing ACA's monthly journal Arms Control Today; monitoring activity in the press and on Capitol Hill; and supporting the analysts in a variety of administrative tasks. The internships are located in Washington, DC and are offered during the fall, spring, and summer semesters for roughly a 3-month period. The Association will consider qualified undergraduates, graduate students, and individuals no longer in school for internship positions; however, the internship program is best suited for undergraduates. 1. Émigré Memorial German Internship Programs (EMGIP)- Germany

German State Parliaments provides internship opportunities for U.S. and Canadian students to complete one- to three-month internships with German state parliaments and ministries from September through December every year. Internships are both paid and unpaid. Please check the website for updated information on how to apply. The deadline for this program is typically at the end of March.

2. The Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program

The goal of the program is to provide young American professionals (23-34) with executive level internships in the federal government and private sectors in Germany. Seminars in Berlin, Paris, Strasbourg and Brussels provide a meaningful understanding of issues facing the European Union and Germany today. Candidates are competitively chosen from the fields of business administration, economics, journalism and mass communications, law, political science and public affairs/public policy. Duration: 9 months.

3. Internship Program – Germany

This program provides practical training opportunities in Germany for American students and recent graduates and non U.S. citizens enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university. Paid placements are available in business, finance, technical, and engineering fields for usually 6 (enrolled students) to 12 months (extension possible up to a total of 18 months for graduates). Programs start individually at the beginning of each month. Apply approximately 5 months prior to your desired start date. A limited number of stipends for one-month language courses are available if you qualify.

4. Summer Internship Program in Germany

This summer program provides training opportunities in Germany for students enrolled in US colleges and universities. Paid placements are available in business/finance, hotel management / tourism, computer science, and engineering fields.

5. Schott Summer Internship Program

This summer program (June - August) provides summer work opportunities for U.S. students (undergraduate, graduate, PhD candidates) in business/marketing & sales, engineering, information technology and physical sciences at Schott Glas in Mainz, Germany. The program starts with a 2-day orientation seminar in Cologne. 2 program options are available: A) 1-month language course in Cologne in June, plus 2 months of summer work at Schott, or B) 3 months of summer work at Schott. Stipends are available to cover tuition and accommodation during the language course if you qualify.

Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) internships

The CIA offers student work opportunities in the form of undergraduate student internships or co-ops, and graduate studies programs. If you would like to work with highly skilled professionals to support US officials who make our country's foreign policy, the CIA is looking for you. Applicants must be US citizens and should have a strong academic record (3.0 GPA or better). Foreign language skills, previous international residency and military experience are pluses. There are several internship and scholarship opportunities available to undergraduates and graduate students. These positions are paid and offer benefits to students, as well. CIEE is an organization devoted to helping students work abroad and has several programs in Europe. These include programs in France, Germany, and Ireland. Internships are available year-round or just for the summer. Student employment provides an opportunity to earn money and continue your education, to train with people who manage the day-to-day business of the Federal government, and to combine your academic study with on-the-job experience. The U.S. Department of State, the official international relations arm of the President of the United States, offers many internship opportunities for university students. These internships are located at the State Department in Washington, D.C. and abroad in U.S. embassies and consulates. The internship gives students an opportunity to experience a career in foreign affairs and gain valuable work experience. Students with language skills and scientific and technical backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. Internships are available during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Students must be available to begin their internships within a particular timetable and serve for a minimum of 10 weeks. EFC Internships

EFC’s core work is representing independent funders at European Union and global levels and providing their members with critical legal and fiscal guidance and knowledge core work. The EFC is always looking for university students wishing to take a one-year break from their studies prior to their final year. Based in Brussels, Belgium this placement offers the opportunity to live and work in the heart of Europe and provides the student with essential employment skills. Internships are available in EFC’s various committees and offices. Embassy and Diplomatic Scholars program, Institute for Experiential Education

Offered each fall and spring semester, the Embassy and Diplomatic Scholars program is designed for students with interests in international relations, including international business and languages. Students intern with international-oriented organizations including embassies, the Department of State, and international nonprofit agencies. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, a sophomore in college or higher (both undergraduates and graduate students may apply), and have at least a 3.0 GPA. The application deadlines are late November for the spring semester and early June for the fall semester, but early applications are encouraged. European Union internships:

1. European Commission internships in Washington, DC.

Internships at the Washington Delegation of the European Commission are offered exclusively on a VOLUNTEER (unpaid) basis. Students enrolled in programs providing academic credit are welcome. A working knowledge of FRENCH is useful, but not essential. Preference is given to candidates available on a FULL TIME basis, i.e., 35-40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Internships are offered three times a year in keeping with the "semester calendar" from: September through December (Fall semester); January through May (Spring semester); June through August (Summer session). Deadlines are as follows: Fall Semester: June 15; Spring Semester: October 15; Summer Session: February 15.

2. European Commission internships in Europe

The European Commission offers a limited number of internships for non-EU nationals. These training periods involve work experience in one of the Commission’s departments and run from 1 March and 1 October each year. The internship duties vary from department to department. The requirements include: a university degree equivalent to the minimum national educational qualifications as detailed in the rules governing in-service training within the European Commission; a thorough knowledge of one Community language and a satisfactory knowledge of one other (for candidates from non-Member States knowledge of one Community language), and be age 30 or under.

3. European Economic and Social Committee internships in Brussels, Belgium

The Committee of the Regions was created by the Maastricht Treaty of 1992, as a representative assembly with the job of giving local and regional authorities a voice at the heart of the European Union. The Committee offers a limited number of internships to non-EU nationals in its various departments. The internships are organized into two 5-month periods, beginning February 16 and September 16. Qualified applicants must already have a university degree and be proficient in at least one Community language. The lower house of the German Bundestag (Parliament), in association with Humboldt University in Berlin, offers an internship program exclusively for U.S. citizens. For 16 weeks, interns can learn about the German political process while serving in the office of a Member of Parliament. Qualified applicants must have completed a university degree, have excellent command of the German language, and have an interest in a career in public service. The internships are paid, with a monthly stipend of 511 euros and housing is provided free of charge to participants. The program typically runs from March1-July 31 and you can apply by sending an application to the address specified in the websites above. An interview will be conducted in the U.S. prior to acceptance into the program, and will be held during the fall before the internships begins.

Educational Programmes Abroad provides unpaid internships for American students in Western Europe (London, Edinburgh, Brussels, Paris, Madrid, Bonn, Berlin). In particular, the organization is successful in placing students in National Parliaments, the European Parliament, law firms, lobbies, and research institutes. Programs are held every semester, spring quarter, and summer and are open to college juniors, seniors, or recent college graduates. Internships in Europe- University of Rochester

The University of Rochester offers a number of internships in Europe during the fall and spring semesters. There are two summer sessions in London and one session in Bonn and Brussels. Applications for fall semester must be in by April 1, for the spring semester by October 31, for summer programs by March 1. Internships International was designed to find quality internships in one of their many international cities. They work with college grads or graduate students who want to expand their resume in order to become more competitive in the academic or professional world. Internships International offers non-credit granting internships in an internship designed by you, the intern. Internships last from eight weeks to three months (some interns have extended beyond the three months) and while they are all non-paying, there are often many opportunities to "moonlight" on the side. The John A. Baker Internship Program- Atlantic Council

This program offers ten to fifteen full time volunteer positions during the fall, spring, and summer academic terms in Washington, DC. These positions require a strong interest in international affairs and U.S. foreign relations and students should have some background in scholarly research. This undergraduate academic internship program provides part-time internships as part of a 9-credit curriculum in Manhattan. It is an opportunity for college students to study global business and culture, while spending a summer immersed in New York. Internships are available in organizations such as Merrill Lynch, the Audubon Society, and the United Nations. The deadline for application is typically in early March.

Regional Internship Center of Southwestern PA

The Summer Internships Program of the National Endowment for the Humanities

The Summer Internships Program of the National Endowment for the Humanities introduces promising college students to the programs, policies, and operations of the federal agency charged with promoting scholarship, education, and public programming in the humanities in the United States. To be eligible you must be entering your junior or senior year in the fall, have declared an undergraduate major in one of the disciplines of the humanities or have a strong background in the humanities, and be a U.S. citizen. Each intern will receive a stipend of $4,000. For applicants on the semester system, the ten-week internship begins on June 1, 2004, and concludes on August 6, 2004. U.S. Trade Representative (USTR)- Internship Opportunities

The student intern program at USTR is a volunteer program where undergraduate and graduate students gain knowledge and experience on U.S. trade policy and, in many cases, earn college credit at the same time. Assignments range from research, analyses, statistics, briefing books, report preparation, meeting and conference planning, letter writing, to covering Hill meetings, hearings, and markups as necessary. Students who are U.S. citizens at the undergraduate and graduate levels are eligible. Students are required to submit a resume, writing sample, and a letter stating period of availability. The Washington Center Internship Program (Washington DC)

The Washington Center is an independent nonprofit organization that provides internship programs and academic seminars to college students from across the country. The Center works with 2,000-3,000 internships placements in Washington representing major professional fields in the private, public and nonprofit sector. This program allows students to gain academic credit for the internship. The Women's Foreign Policy Group internships (Washington DC)

The Women's Foreign Policy Group is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit, educational membership organization which promotes global engagement and the leadership, visibility and participation of women in international affairs. Work in Britain is sponsored by BUNAC and through the program you can become a part of everyday British life by finding any type of job. The Student Exchange Employment Program Blue Card provided to Work in Britain participants acts as an entry visa and allows US university students to work in Britain for up to six months maximum. The Blue Card is available to full-time US students who are US citizens or permanent US residents aged 18 and upwards. To be eligible for the program, you must be currently a full-time student taking at least eight credit hours or more, matriculated towards a degree at an accredited US or Canadian college or university. You must enter Britain to begin the program within one semester of your last period of full-time study - the ‘semester of eligibility’. World Health Organization (WHO) Internship Program

The World Health Organization offers unpaid internship opportunities for graduate or post-graduate university students, generally in health-related programs. Only a very limited number of such internships are available. To be eligible, students must be at least 20 years of age and must be enrolled in a course of study leading to a formal qualification. They must possess fluency in at least one of the working languages of the office of assignment. The internships last for a minimum of 6 weeks and up to 12 weeks maximum. World Trade Organization (WTO) Internship Program

The WTO secretariat maintains a limited internship program for post-graduate university students wishing to gain practical experience and deeper knowledge of the multilateral trading system. Only a limited number of such internship posts in Geneva, Switzerland is available. The eligibility criterion is as follows: interns must be nationals of WTO members and countries and customs territories engaged in accession negotiations; interns will have completed their undergraduate studies in a relevant discipline (e.g. economics, law, political science, international relations), and shall have embarked upon postgraduate studies; the minimum age for an intern shall be 21 years and the maximum age 30 years.
