Europe East and West Undergraduate Research Symposium

The Undergraduate Research Symposium is a competition designed to provide undergraduate students from the University of Pittsburgh and other colleges and universities in the region with advanced research experiences and opportunities to develop presentation skills. The event is open to undergraduates from all majors who have written a research paper from a social science, humanities, or business perspective focusing on the study of Western or Eastern Europe, including Russia. It is held on the University of Pittsburgh-Oakland campus. The symposium is held during the spring term. Please consult the website for the most updated information.

The Composition Program Writing Awards

The Department of English runs this annual composition writing competition every spring. This writing contest is intended to honor outstanding work by students writers in CAS or CGS enrolled in any of the courses offered by the Composition Program. The Ossip Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Writing

Offered through the Department of English, this essay competition awards prizes for outstanding essays written for courses taken at the University of Pittsburgh. The Undergraduate Research Fair (Honors College)

The Undergraduate Research Fair is run as a poster session. This is a kind of open house where participants display posters describing their research. Presenters use any format and any additional materials necessary to convey their ideas. No formal talk to a large group is involved. Instead, the audience walks from table to table reading posters and discussing points of curiosity with the presenters. In addition, the discussion that can develop with the audience, as well as with other participants, can be challenging and stimulating. Students in all undergraduate divisions and majors are encouraged to submit abstracts of their research. Please check the website for the most updated information.

Women’s Studies Annual Student Research Paper Prize Competition

This prize competition recognizes the best student research on women or gender issues and concerns. The purpose of the competition is to provide recognition for excellent student scholarship in the field of women and gender studies. The competition is open to all students at the University of Pittsburgh. Total prizes of up to $500 will be awarded for the best graduate and undergraduate papers. Women’s Studies Student Research Fund

Awards from $25 to $1,000 will be given to graduate and undergraduate students registered at the University of Pittsburgh demonstrating a need for funds in order to conduct research on issues relating to women and gender. The number and amount of awards vary each year depending on donations to the program. Funds may be used for travel expenses, secretarial costs, research materials, or other direct costs related to research. Students should submit research proposals by November 1 and April 1 during each academic semester. Please consult the website for information about research proposals.

M. Jarvin Emerson Student Paper Competition

The Mid-Continent Regional Science Association announces the Student Paper Competition in Madison, Wisconsin, usually held in May. All students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible. Student papers dealing with all aspects of regional development, including cultural, physical and economic processes, are welcome. The first place winner will receive $150 and the M. Jarvin Emerson Award. The winning entry will also be published in the Association’s journal, The Journal of Regional Analysis & Policy. Second place winners will receive $100. NCUR Undergraduate Research Competition

NCUR brings together undergraduates involved in scholarly and artistic activities representing a range of disciplines including creative arts, mathematics, business, social sciences, humanities, physical and life sciences, natural resources, and engineering, among others. The event includes: topical sessions of 15-minute oral presentations, interdisciplinary poster sessions, artistic performances and visual art exhibits. Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL)

The Allegheny County Center for English as a Second Language is looking for qualified applicants to become part of their ESL tutoring program. The program consists of 12 hours of tutor training, observation, and mentoring. Internship credit may be available for students willing to participate in the program. ESL students come from Germany, France, and Latin America, so these language skills would be particularly useful. Please contact Danis Kubiak at 412-281-7937 for further information.

Teaching English in France

Through the French Embassy in the United States, 1000-1500 positions available for Americans to teach in primary and secondary schools and Instituts universitaires de formation des maîtres in all parts of France and the DOM-TOM. Applicants must be between 20 and 34 years of age, be currently pursuing a college degree or have already attained a college degree, and have a proficiency in French. Students without a major or minor in French but with a basic proficiency in French can also apply. There are several application deadlines in December, January, and February but priority is given to students who meet the December and January deadlines.
