Global Studies Faculty Fellow

2023-2024 Global Studies Faculty Fellow

Each year, the GSC selects one outstanding University of Pittsburgh faculty member whose scholarship supports the Center’s research, curricular, and outreach priorities as its Faculty Fellow. This award is designed to advance and showcase faculty research related to GSC’s themes.

Research Initiatives:

  • Critical World Ecologies
  • Migrations
  • Global Health
  • Contested Cities

The GSC Faculty Fellow will deliver one public lecture in the course of the award year (August 2023 through June 2024). In addition, the Fellow will participate in several (3-4) major Center events pertaining to her or his research throughout the year (to be arranged in consultation with the Director). The Fellowship will support:

  • Research and projects related to one or more GSC themes;
  • Domestic and international travel;
  • Development of a new or significantly enhanced course with substantial coverage of one or more GSC themes.

The fellowship includes up to $15,000 to organize a scholarly event (e.g., workshop, conference, exhibition, performance, seminar, research collaboration) (see guidelines below for some restrictions); and an additional $5,000 for travel, research, and curricular development. The event will be held at the University of Pittsburgh during the fellowship year. (The Center will provide some staff support for the event.)

Eligibility: The Faculty Fellow competition is open to full-time and part-time TS and NTS faculty (including lecturers and contract faculty) who are affiliated with the GSC (for a list of Affiliated Faculty or to request an affiliation with Veronica Dristas). Applicants must have received a letter acknowledging their affiliation prior to submitting the application for funding. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate that they have already made significant progress in planning or executing a project that promises to have a significant impact in their field. The Fellowship is intended in part to enhance the visibility or impact of ongoing research or to facilitate outreach. The Faculty Fellow must be in residence in Pittsburgh and not on leave or sabbatical during the award year.

Deadline: January 9th, 2023

To apply: Faculty members who wish to apply should review the fellowship guidelines, complete the GSC Faculty Grant Application Form, and submit the requested documentation here via Submittable.

Applicants need not provide specific travel requests as part of the application, however, such requests in writing will be required if subsequent plans are made to use Fellowship funds for travel. For travel for conference participation, awardees must submit the abstract of the paper to be presented and a discussion of its relevance to the Fellow's overall research agenda; as well as evidence of the paper's acceptance by the conference organizers.
