Welcome to the Global Guide, a site to begin the search for scholarships for research and study abroad, volunteer and internship opportunities, and employment in Pittsburgh, the U.S. or abroad. You can also find reference material on global topics at many of the sites listed. We’ve noted where Global Studies Alumni are working and our office will provide alumni contact information when requested. The Offices of Student Employment and Placement Assistance has provided us with a presentation on internationally focused job searching which can be accessed here.

The Global Studies office has a copy of: Careers in International Affairs, 8th Edition (2008), Georgetown University Press, Washington DC Alternatives to the Peace Corps: A Guide to Global Volunteering, 12th Edition, (2008), Institute for Food and Development Policy, Food First Books, Oakland CA The books can be loaned out for 3 hours at a time. Students will have to leave their student ID as a deposit.

The Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy (CDDEP)	The Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy (CDDEP) was founded with the objective of using research to support better decision-making in health policy. Many CDDEP projects are global in scope, spanning Africa, Asia, and North America. The strength of CDDEP derives from its researchers’ experience in addressing country and region-specific health problems, as well as truly global challenges, while recognizing the circumstances in which the answers must fit.	view
The Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship	The Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship, established in 1987, is a highly-competitive national fellowship program that provides college graduates with the opportunity to gain a Washington perspective on key issues of peace and security. Twice yearly, the Fellowship's Board of Directors selects a group of outstanding individuals to spend six to nine months in Washington. Supported by a stipend, the Fellows serve as full-time junior staff members at the participating organization of their choice.	view
The Population Council	The Population Council, an international, nonprofit, nongovernmental organization, seeks to improve the well-being and reproductive health of current and future generations around the world and to help achieve a humane, equitable, and sustainable balance between people and resources.	view
The Stanley Foundation	The Stanley Foundation brings fresh voices and original ideas to debates on global and regional problems. The foundation seeks a secure peace with freedom and justice, built on world citizenship and effective global governance.	view
The Tinker Foundation, Inc.	The Tinker Foundation was created in 1959 by Dr. Edward Larocque Tinker. His lifelong interest in the Iberian tradition in the Old and New Worlds directed the Foundation's overall focus on Latin America, Spain and Portugal. More recently the Foundation has included in its mandate the support of projects concerning Antarctica, a region of significant interest on an international scale.	view
Think Impact (Formerly: Student Movement for Real Change)	Think Impact is a non-profit organization that connects American college students and recent graduates with rural villages in Africa to become social entrepreneurs. They do this through internship and fellowship programs in South Africa, Kenya and Sierra Leone. Through Think Impact’s Global Development Internships and Fellowships, young people are given the opportunity to alleviate poverty through a sustained commitment to social innovation, leadership and entrepreneurship.	view

Trickle Up Program	The Americas region has continued to play an important role in the growth of the organization since the founding of the Trickle Up Program in the Caribbean. Beginning in 1979 with the first ten businesses in Dominica, Trickle Up has provided seed capital to help launch or expand 23,620 business in the Americas alone. In 2001, Trickle Up helped start 1,780 businesses in eight countries: Bolivia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Peru.	view
U.S. Agency for International Development	USAID is an independent federal government agency that receives overall foreign policy guidance from the Secretary of State. USAID supports long-term and equitable economic growth and advances U.S. foreign policy objectives	view
U.S. Broadcasting Board of Governors	Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) encompasses all U.S. civilian international broadcasting, including the Voice of America (VOA), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), Radio Free Asia (RFA), Radio and TV Martí, and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks (MBN)—Radio Sawa and Alhurra Television. BBG broadcasters distribute programming in 60 languages to an estimated weekly audience of 175 million people via radio, TV, the Internet and other new media.	view
U.S. Chamber of Commerce (International AmCHam)	The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business federation representing 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations. More than 96% of U.S. Chamber members are small businesses with 100 employees or fewer. The Chamber's International Division works in collaboration with approval 112 American Chambers of Commerce operating in 99 countries to expand global engagement. The Chamber also runs the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), a program of the National Endowment for Democracy.	view
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services	U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is the federal agency that oversees lawful immigration to the United States. USCIS is a component of the Department of Homeland Security	view
U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom	The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, which was created by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 to monitor the status of freedom of thought, conscience, and religion or belief abroad, as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and related international instruments, and to give independent policy recommendations to the President, Secretary of State, and Congress.	view
U.S. Congressional Budget Office	CBO produces policy analyses, cost estimates of legislation, and budget and economic projections that serve as a basis for the Congress's decisions about spending and taxes. Every piece of legislation affecting the use of the nation's resources undergoes CBO's scrutiny. The agency is a public-sector think tank that employs an elite, multidisciplinary staff of professional analysts--public-policy and budget experts, economists, and other critical thinkers who enjoy challenges--at levels ranging from undergraduate and graduate interns to researchers with doctorates and substantial experience.	view
U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Services	The Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) works to improve foreign market access for U.S. products, build new markets, improve the competitive position of U.S. agriculture in the global marketplace, and provide food aid and technical assistance to foreign countries.	view
U.S. Department of Commerce International Trade Administration	ITA's mission is to create prosperity by strengthening the competitiveness of U.S. industry, promoting trade and investment, and ensuring fair trade and compliance with trade laws and agreements.	view
U.S. Department of Defence Education Activity	The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is a civilian agency of the U.S. Department of Defense. It is headed by a director who oversees all agency functions from DoDEA headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. DoDEA's schools are divided into three areas, within each of these three areas, schools are organized into districts headed by superintendents.DoDEA's schools serve the children of military service members and Department of Defense civilian employees throughout the world. Children of enlisted military personnel represent 85 percent of the total enrollment in DoDEA schools.	view

U.S. Department of Education	The U.S. Department of Education is the agency of the federal government that establishes policy for, administers, and coordinates most federal assistance to education.	view
U.S. Department of Education, International Affairs Office	IAO is located in the Office of the Secretary of the U.S. Dept. of Education and is responsible for the overall coordination of the Department of Education's international presence. IAO works with Department program offices, support units, and senior leadership as well as with external partners including other federal agencies, state and local agencies, foreign governments, international organizations, and the private sector.	view
U.S. Department of Homeland Security	Homeland Security leverages resources within federal, state, and local governments, coordinating the transition of multiple agencies and programs into a single, integrated agency focused on protecting the American people and their homeland. More than 87,000 different governmental jurisdictions at the federal, state, and local level have homeland security responsibilities.	view
U.S. Department of Justice	The Department of Justice enforces the law and defends the interests of the United States according to the law; to ensure public safety against threats foreign and domestic; to provide federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime; to seek just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior; and to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans.	view
U.S. Department of Labor	The Department of Labor fosters and promotes the welfare of the job seekers, wage earners, and retirees of the United States by improving their working conditions, advancing their opportunities for profitable employment, protecting their retirement and health care benefits, helping employers find workers, strengthening free collective bargaining, and tracking changes in employment, prices, and other national economic measurements.	view
U.S. Department of State	The Foreign Service (FS) is a corps of about 11,500 employees who are dedicated to representing America and responding to the needs of American citizens in other countries.	view
