Welcome to the Global Guide, a site to begin the search for scholarships for research and study abroad, volunteer and internship opportunities, and employment in Pittsburgh, the U.S. or abroad. You can also find reference material on global topics at many of the sites listed. We’ve noted where Global Studies Alumni are working and our office will provide alumni contact information when requested. The Offices of Student Employment and Placement Assistance has provided us with a presentation on internationally focused job searching which can be accessed here.

The Global Studies office has a copy of: Careers in International Affairs, 8th Edition (2008), Georgetown University Press, Washington DC Alternatives to the Peace Corps: A Guide to Global Volunteering, 12th Edition, (2008), Institute for Food and Development Policy, Food First Books, Oakland CA The books can be loaned out for 3 hours at a time. Students will have to leave their student ID as a deposit.

Care USA

CARE is a humanitarian organization fighting to end global poverty, focusing on working alongside poor women because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty. Women are at the heart of CARE's community-based efforts to improve basic education, prevent the spread of HIV, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. CARE also delivers emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters, and helps people rebuild their lives.

CENIT (Center for the Working Girl)

CENIT, El Centro de la Niña Trabajadora, or the Center for the Working Girl as it is known in English, is a non-governmental, non-profit organization devoted to helping working children (especially working girls) and their families overcome grinding poverty and improve their quality of lives through education and job training, nutrition programs, health and social services, psychological help and recreation.

Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA)

The Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA) was established in 1967 to offer intensive advanced Arabic language training at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. Since its inception, CASA has trained more than 1,387 upper level undergraduates, graduates, and professors specializing in various areas of Middle Eastern Studies. For the 2012-13 academic year, an additional 40 (37 CASA I and 3 CASA II) fellows are being trained.

Center for Human Rights Legal Action

CALDH is a Washington DC based organization that promotes human rights in Guatemala. In conjunction with other human rights organization ins Guatemala and the U.S., CALDH files petitions on behalf of victims before the OAS’s Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. The Guatemala office focuses on interviewing victims family members, preparing affidavits, reviewing court records, conducting investigations of court procedures and writing reports.

Center for Latin American Studies

The mission of CLAS is to expand and enrich academic resources relating to Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) at the University of Pittsburgh.  These resources provide the means for students to become experts about LAC and for faculty to pursue research, enhance their expertise, and disseminate new knowledge on the region.  CLAS also shares its resources locally, nationally, and internationally with members of the academic community as well as with public and private sector organizations and the general public.

Center for Russian and East European Studies, University of Pittsburgh

The Center for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Pittsburgh (REES) is an interdisciplinary academic center focusing on central and eastern Europe and the successor states of the Soviet Union. REES is a Title VI National Resource Center funded by the U.S. Department of Education, and as such plays a vital role in fostering scholarship and teaching on this dynamic region.

Center of Concern

Centers for Inter-American Studies, Internships in Ecuador

Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program

The Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program combines a paid public policy internship with two career and policy seminars. Fellows gain real-world experience, take a crash course in market-based policy analysis, and acquire the professional skills necessary to effect change. Children Affected by AIDS Foundation (CAAF)

CAAF is a national grantmaking foundation who awards funds to organizations that are serving families impacted by AIDS. Internships vary depending on the needs of the foundation and the talents of the intern.
