Welcome to the Global Guide, a site to begin the search for scholarships for research and study abroad, volunteer and internship opportunities, and employment in Pittsburgh, the U.S. or abroad. You can also find reference material on global topics at many of the sites listed. We’ve noted where Global Studies Alumni are working and our office will provide alumni contact information when requested. The Offices of Student Employment and Placement Assistance has provided us with a presentation on internationally focused job searching which can be accessed here.

The Global Studies office has a copy of: Careers in International Affairs, 8th Edition (2008), Georgetown University Press, Washington DC Alternatives to the Peace Corps: A Guide to Global Volunteering, 12th Edition, (2008), Institute for Food and Development Policy, Food First Books, Oakland CA The books can be loaned out for 3 hours at a time. Students will have to leave their student ID as a deposit.

Green Peace USA

Green Peace values are reflected in their environmental campaign work: they 'bear witness' to environmental destruction in a peaceful, non-violent manner. Green Peace uses non-violent confrontation to raise the level and quality of public debate. In exposing threats to the environment and finding solutions they have no permanent allies or adversaries. Green Peace ensures financial independence from political or commercial interests. They seek solutions for, and promote open, informed debate about society's environmental choices.

The organization offers many opportunities, typically in the areas of geology, engineering, and environmental science. Paid internships are offered at several of our offices. They specifically look for students at the junior level or above who are enrolled in a college program relevant to the position.

Hands for Help Nepal

Hands for Help Nepal is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that sends volunteers to various projects in Nepal. Currently, Hands for Help Nepal provides volunteer opportunities that include teaching in schools, assisting orphanages and community health clinics, teaching English in a Buddhist monastery, school constriction and renovation and teaching environmental awareness. Programs last from one to five months.

Hospital Albert Schwitzer

Established in 1956 by Dr. Larimer and Mrs. Gwen Mellon, Hospital Albert Schweitzer serves a rural population of approximately 285,000 in Haiti’s central Artibonite Valley. It is an integrated health service, incorporating a 200 bed hospital, a network of health centers and dispensaries, as well as community-based services in health promotion, disease prevention and economic development.

In Africa, South Asia and Latin America, The Hunger Project seeks to end hunger and poverty by empowering people to lead lives of self-reliance, meet their own basic needs and build better futures for their children. The Hunger Project does three essential activities: mobilizing village clusters at the grassroots level to build self-reliance, empowering women as key change agents, and forging effective partnerships with local government.

Incarnate World Missionaries

IWM seeks a new economic, social and political order promoting justice and solidarity. Missionaries work with homeless women and children and indigenous peoples performing services that may include human rights work, health care, clinic/hospice ministry and pastoral ministry. Missionaries serve in the US, Guatemala, Peru, Mexico, and throughout Africa. Missionaries must be at least 21 years old and in good physical and mental health and willing to commit to one year in their own country or two to three years in a country other than their own.

Indigenous Women's Network

IWN was created in 1965 to support the self-determination of Indigenous women, families, communities and Nations in the Americas and Pacific Basin. In the process of promoting self determination, IWN supports public education and advocacy, revitalization of indigenous language and culture, elimination of all forms of oppression, the attainment of self-sufficiency, and the protection of Mother Earth for future generations. Interns have an opportunity to work in a variety of areas including research, publications, web site development and marketing.

Institute for International Economics

The Peter G. Peterson Institute for International Economics is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan research institution devoted to the study of international economic policy.
