Welcome to the Global Guide, a site to begin the search for scholarships for research and study abroad, volunteer and internship opportunities, and employment in Pittsburgh, the U.S. or abroad. You can also find reference material on global topics at many of the sites listed. We’ve noted where Global Studies Alumni are working and our office will provide alumni contact information when requested. The Offices of Student Employment and Placement Assistance has provided us with a presentation on internationally focused job searching which can be accessed here.

The Global Studies office has a copy of: Careers in International Affairs, 8th Edition (2008), Georgetown University Press, Washington DC Alternatives to the Peace Corps: A Guide to Global Volunteering, 12th Edition, (2008), Institute for Food and Development Policy, Food First Books, Oakland CA The books can be loaned out for 3 hours at a time. Students will have to leave their student ID as a deposit.

Interplast

Interplast is a nonprofit organization that partners with physicians and provides free reconstructive surgeries for the poor and builds year-round medical access in underserved areas. It restores the dreams of those with deformities and injuries, and impacts the world by renewing the health of thousands of children and adults each year so they can go to school, provide for their families and contribute to society. The organization works in more that 25 sites in over 12 countries throughout the world and has provided almost 57,000 surgeries since 1969.

J Street

J Street was founded to change the dynamics of American politics and policy on Israel and the Middle East. The promote the security and future of Israel as the democratic home of the Jewish people depend on rapidly achieving a two-state solution and regional comprehensive peace.  Their mission is to promote meaningful American leadership to achieve peace and security in the Middle East and to broaden the debate on these issues nationally and in the Jewish community.

Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC)

Each year JVC offers about 500 men and women the opportunity to work full time for justice and peace by serving the poor directly and working for structural change. The challenge to volunteers is to integrate Christian faith by working and living among the poor, living modestly in a cooperative household with other volunteers, examining the causes of social injustice. Applicants must have a Christian motivation, be 21 years or older, have a college degree or applicable work experience and be without dependents.

Jewish Heritage Programs (JHP)

JHP is a unique campus outreach organization that began on the University of Pennsylvania campus five years ago. The goal of JHP is to help students provide peer-to-peer based Jewish identity programming geared towards unaffiliated students. The programs are designed to inspire students to celebrate their heritage and instill a sense of identity and pride in their religion. JHP offers leadership training and mentoring opportunities with Jewish professionals from a variety of fields. Other activities include Shabbat dinners, historical programs, and holiday celebrations.

Joint Assistance Center, Inc. (JAC)

JAC is an NGO headquartered in Haryana State in the outskirts of Delhi, India. It coordinates conferences in training in various parts of India on disaster preparedness and works in liaison with group, individuals, and small grassroots projects throughout the country. JAC focuses on community, welfare, health, education, youth development, and agricultural training. Short term (one moth) and long term (greater than three months) projects are available.

Lint Center for National Security Studies

The Lint Center for National Security Studies, Inc., founded in 2007, is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization created to award merit-based scholarships for Counterintelligence and National Security Workers, their children and scholars, and to advance the study of National Security, cross-cultural studies, and global understanding.

Los Ninos

Los Ninos supports long-term community development projects along the US-Mexico border, and works with high schools and universities in Canada and the US. Program areas include nutrition, ecology, microcredit, cross-cultural issues, and education designed to prmote self-reliance and social awareness. Los Ninos offers long-term volunteer opportunities to assist in these programs.

Manzil Welfare Society is a non-profit organization providing a community and resources for local youth from low-income backgrounds to learn, teach, be creative, and see the world in new ways. Located in Khan Market, we serve those living in the servant quarters and one-room tenements that cohabitate this affluent area of New Delhi.

Mark Nordenberg Internship Abroad Scholarships

The Mark Nordenberg Internship Abroad Scholarships are offered through the European Studies Center/European Union Center of Excellence, and are available to students planning an internship in Europe. Three awards of $1,500.00 are given each academic year.

Mediators Beyond Borders

" Mediators Beyond Borders is a non-profit, humanitarian organization established to partner with communities worldwide to build their conflict resolution capacity for preventing, resolving and healing from conflict. This partnership involves the design and implementation of sustainable peace building initiatives responsive to the needs and culture of the communities, and to the history of each conflict. MBB is not a first responder, and is not prepared to intervene in the midst of violent crises. Mediators Beyond Borders interprets ""beyond borders"" broadly.

Medical Service Corporation International

Medical Service Corporation International (MSCI) was founded in 1973.  Over the past 30 years they have implemented over 250 health projects in 60 countries.  MSCI addresses the root causes of public health issues by mobilizing people, creating self-reliant health systems, empowering  and strengthening local resources and government to engage in the projects for the future.

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC)

MCC is the cooperative relief, service, and peace agency of the Mennonite and Brethern in Christ churches of North America. Currently just over 1,200 people serve in agriculture, health, education, social services, and community development fields in 55 countries. Travel, living expenses, and a small stipend are provided. Volunteers should be Christian, actively involved in a Church congregation, and in agreement with MCC's nonviolent principles.

Middle East Studies Association of North America

MESA is a non-political learned society that brings together scholars, educators and those interested in the study of the region from all over the world. From its inception in 1966 with 50 founding members, MESA has increased its membership to more than 3,000 and now serves as an umbrella organization for more than sixty institutional members and thirty-nine affiliated organizations. The association is a constituent society of the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Council of Area Studies Associations, and a member of the National Humanities Alliance.

Minnesota Advocates has received international recognition for a broad range of innovative programs to promote human rights and prevent the violation of those rights. Minnesota Advocates provides investigative fact finding, direct legal representation, collaboration for education and training, and a broad distribution of publications.
