The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a private, nonprofit organization created in 1983 to strengthen democratic institutions around the world through nongovernmental efforts. The Endowment is governed by an independent, nonpartisan board of directors. With its annual congressional appropriation, it makes hundreds of grants each year to support prodemocracy groups in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union. |

Through the graduate and undergraduate certificate program, students develop an awareness of major currents of global change and the issues it raises, the capacity for effective communication across cultural and linguistic boundaries, and personal adaptability to diverse cultures. Students choose one of six global concentrations (Changing identities in a global world; Communication, technology and society; Conflict and conflict resolution; Global economy and global governance; Global Health; and Sustainable development) and unite it with a study of a particular region and language. |

Over 200 University of Pittsburgh faculty members are affiliated with GSC. Their teaching expertise and research specializations drive the content of our thematic concentrations. Each academic year, they teach hundreds of courses on global themes in more than 75 departments and schools. |

GSC’s outreach program draws on the outstanding resources available at Pitt in order to provide resources and sponsor activities that enrich the intellectual and cultural life of K-12 students and teachers, university/college faculty, local business groups, and the Pittsburgh community in general. GSC’s outreach program offers six different types of resources: workshops, professional development, Act 48 Credit, lending library and resources, speakers bureau, and lectures. |
