Student Movement for Real Change (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org) aims to answer poverty through the power of young leaders. We provide a comprehensive program to educate, empower and support university students to identify development projects and social enterprises that offer sustainable solutions to health and education in developing communities.

Global Development Internship
The Global Development Internship (GDI) aims to provide college students on-the-ground development experience, cultural immersion, and the necessary leadership skills to develop sustainable projects that address local needs through a 6 or 8 week internship (depending on the community) in developing communities.
Interns will complete community needs assessments, coordinate evaluation of SMRC projects and work with local people to identify development projects. In 2007 and 2008 SMRC hosted the internship in Manyeleti, South Africa with great success.  Read about young leaders' experience and challenging issues they uncovered during their internships.
Students are invited to apply by either early selection (which tends to be less selective) or by regular selection.
In June of 2010 SMRC will bring students to Manyeleti, South Africa and to Kayafungo, Kenya to live with local families and learn first hand about the challenges of rural poverty.
Kenya
Kayafungo, Kenya Internship Details (2010)
Kayafungo is home to over 40,000 Kenyans who identify themselves as members of the Giriama tribe.  Located just 52 km from Mombasa, these communities lack access to water and sanitation.  In Kenya, you will have the opportunity engage with the people of Kayafungo to learn from local community members what can be done about water. Applications will be available in October of 2009.
South Africa
Manyeleti, South Africa Internship Details (2010)
Join SMRC in Manyeleti, a group of rural villages home to Shangaan people and neighbors to Kruger National Park.  During your internship you will work in one of three communities with a group of 5-6 students to learn about community assets and challenge yourself to understand the complex challenges of improving health and education in rural South Africa. Applications will be available in October of 2009.

Call for Papers -For the United Nation’s International Day for Tolerance Conference
The International Day for Tolerance is an annual observance declared by UNESCO in 1995 to generate public awareness of the dangers of intolerance. One of the fundamental principles to building greater tolerance requires access to education. Intolerance is often rooted in ignorance and fear: fear of the unknown, of the “other,” other cultures, religions, and nations. Therefore, during this year’s celebration of the International Day for Tolerance, we placed greater emphasis on educating about tolerance, human rights, and other cultures.
