Model United Nations at Your School

This workshop is designed to assist high school faculty to prepare their students to participate in Model United Nations Simulations. The workshop is approved for five (5) Act 48 hours. Lunch will be provided.

Morning session will begin with an introduction to the United Nations (UN) as an international organization; providing background information to include:
• Context of the UN’s founding;
• Purpose of the UN;
• Review of the structure, mission and powers of the principal organs of the UN;
• Review of several of the important UN committees.

Afternoon session will focus on current issues of the UN that are most relevant to Model UN Simulations:
• Understanding current debates and the specific terminology used in the debate;
• Guidelines for teachers on assisting students with research, resolution writing, and debate;
• Brief descriptions of the Millennium Development Goals, Peacekeeping, North-South debate and UN reform.

The workshop will close with participants not only learning the rules of debate, but how to teach them to their students.

Amy Langham and Dan Giovannelli will facilitate the workshop. Ms. Langham is the Executive Director of Global Solutions Education Fund Pittsburgh. She has over 10 years experience in Model UN training, coaching and organizing. Mr. Giovannelli participated in Model UN for over 5 years as a delegate. Currently he is the staff advisor to the University of Pittsburgh undergraduate Model UN Club.
