November 1, 2009 - INPAC-sponsored Fieldtrip to the SV Temple in Penn Hills, PA
The students attending the course on Religion in India (RelgSt 1500/Hist 1757) are going on a field trip to Sri Venkateshwara Hindu Temple, in Penn Hills, PA . The trip is an important component of the course enabling students to observe and have the the rituals of the local Hindu community explained by the temple priest. This trip is supported by INPAC.
November 14th, 2009 - Chhandayan presents a Very Special Concert of Indian Music
at the Public Health auditorium, Univ. of Pittsburgh.
6:30 p.m.
The main artists are renowned vocalist Sandip Ghosh from India with Pt. Samir Chatterjee on tabla.
An additional attraction will be a vocal and instrumental duet in the fist hour, in which two musicians from Pittsburgh (Nidrita and Asish Sinha) will join two musicians from the Washington DC area (Soumya Chakraborty and Debu Nayak). Please mark your calendar and come to the show to make it a success !

November 22, 2008 - CHHANDAYAN presents a vocal recital of classical and semi classical (Thumri) music by Smt Mitali Banerjee Bhawmik, Pandit Samir Chatterjee and Sri Dipanjan Das

The concert will feature Ms. Mitali Banerjee Bhawmik, a very brilliant singer of North Indian classical and semi-classical styles. She will be accompanied on Tabla by Pandit Samir Chatterjee, one of the most profound performers and teachers of Indian music. Sri Dipanjan Das will join them on the Harmonium. There will also be a short Tabla solo by Mr. Ashis Suresh Yeri, one of Pt. Chatterjee's students from the University of Pittsburgh.

October 10-12, 2008 - CONFERENCE: Islam and Popular Culture in Indonesia and Malaysia
Home to approximately one-fifth of the world¹s Muslim population, Indonesia and Malaysia are often overlooked or misrepresented in media discourses about Islam. Ideas, sounds, images, gestures, and meanings about Islam abound in contemporary popular cultural forms including film, music, television, radio, comics, fashion, magazines, and cyberculture. By focusing on popular culture, we will emphasize the dynamic, contested, and performative nature of Islam in contemporary Indonesia and Malaysia. View the conference web site.
Special events included a screening of the film Gubra (Anxiety) and a concert by Indonesia dangdut superstars Rhoma Irama and Soneta, as well as Pittsburgh's own Dangdut Cowboys!

October 2, 2008 - Celebrating Gandhi: The Man and His Teachings
In celebration of Mahatma Gandhi's birthday, a non-denominational candlelight prayer vigil was held outside Heinz Chapel, followed by a lecture by David Cortright, president of the Fourth Freedom Forum and research fellow at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He is the author of Gandhi and Beyond: Nonviolence in an Age of Terrorism (Paradigm, 2006).
