Dr. Annemie Maertens

Dr. Maertens is an Assistant Professor in International Development at the University of Pittsburgh. She is associated with the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs and has a joint appointment at the Department of Economics.

Her research interests are in the field of development economics. She focuses on the social and behavioral aspects of individual decision-making, using behavioral experiments in the laboratory and in the field, randomized controlled trials, and  econometric analysis of household and firm survey data. Her work tends to have a geographical focus on South Asia, and India in particular, where she spent 16 months during 2007-2008 collecting data for her dissertation. In terms of topics, she has worked on (agricultural) technology adoption, education and farmers’ attitudes towards risk for her dissertation. Her current research interests also include agricultural markets, social networks, child and maternal nutrition, and the Indian family and marriage market.
