Overview

Whether you dream of becoming an ambassador, CEO of a multinational corporation, a volunteer with Doctors Without Boarders, or simply like to be around others who have a world view, the ISLLC (International Studies Living Learning Community) is the perfect living environment for you.

The ISLLC, a partnership between the Global Studies Program of the University Center for International Studies and the Office of Residence Life, draws on the strengths of the world renowned international offerings at Pitt. It creates a community for students to explore, develop, exchange and experience world views, issues, culture, and offers exciting experiences where you can develop a more in-depth understanding of global events and issues, cultures and beliefs. The goal of the ISLLC is to create a community of students to...

  • explore worldviews and cultural roots while engaging with diverse people, ideas, and experiences.

  • exchange ideas on global issues and world events

  • develop communication and analytical skills

  • experience and celebrate diverse cuisine, language, music and the arts.

  • access special academic programs on international issues

The ISLLC is home to 48 students and one Resident Assistant and is located within Sutherland Hall. Sutherland Hall is located adjacent to the Petersen Events Center on the upper campus, adjacent to the major athletic facilities and providing a view of the entire campus. Sutherland Hall is home to 768 men and women, both first-year and upper-class students. The ISLLC's private lounge provides program participants with international periodicals and resources, music, and a great place to hang out. Each floor of Sutherland Hall enjoys a TV lounge or study room, and the ground floor of each wing also boasts a fitness center, laundry facility, and meeting rooms. In addition, the building's commons area hosts Jock's Place all-you-can-eat dining facility, Sutherland Snack Shop, a computer center, and a mailroom.

The ISLLC floor is led by James Ostendorf, a Resident Assistant (RA) who is a successful, enthusiastic area studies student and former LLC member. He will work with LLC members to help them adjust to college life, and to guide them to the many academic, social and professional resources available within the University Center for International Studies, the University of Pittsburgh, and local organizations. With input from LLC members, the RA will organize a variety of social, academic, cultural and pre-professional programs.

Residence Life and the Global Studies Program of the University Center for International Studies combine forces to provide bi-monthly forums on critical world issues specifically for the ISLLC. We also collaborate with other LLC members to plan such global activities as film screenings, coffee and politics discussion groups, book discussions, cultural performances, participation in International Week, and community service. Most ISLLC events are open specifically to ISLLC students.

Obligations and Application Process

ISLLC Community members must commit themselves to uphold the spirit of this internationally focused community. Students are the foundation of the program and its success depends upon their ability and willingness to interact and function as a community, initiate and attend activities, and serve on the ISLLC planning steering committee. In particular, ISLLC students agree to...

  • attend five forums and one ISLLC community planning meeting per term.

  • adhere to the ISLLC Student Agreement Statement

  • if a returning student, maintain a minimum 2.5 QPA.

To apply for the ISLLC, students must complete two different applications:

1) Electronic University Housing/Dining Services Contract, by the due date stamped on your information packet (sent by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid after they have received your tuition deposit). When asked to indicate your housing preferences, you must indicate the residence halls in which you would like to live in the event that you are not admitted into the ISLLC. In other words, you must list your back-up housing preferences. If you have questions about the Housing/Dining Services contract, you may contact Panther Central at www.pc.pitt.edu, 412-648-1100, or pc@bc.pitt.edu.

2) ISLLC online application, by May 15. Please note, however, that places in the ISLLC are filled on a first come, first served basis, so don't delay!
