Each of the area studies National Resource Centers within UCIS offers a wide-range of services for academic and cultural support in the local communities, foundations, businesses and area schools (click on the links above for area-specific information). Each program is staffed with an outreach coordinator who oversees the cultivation and dissemination of information about a particular area. The Asian Studies Center, Center for Latin American Studies, Center for Russian & East European Studies, and the Center for West European Studies/European Union Center all provide dedicated community outreach services. EducationEducational outreach focuses on promoting international education by advising K-12 teachers, college faculty, and community college educators in the development of curriculum, with emphasis on language and international studies. In addition to curriculum review and writing, UCIS arranges for the sharing of intellectual and physical resources through the Area Studies Speakers Service, teacher training workshops, area studies newsletters, teaching resource lending libraries, and cooperative teaching opportunities. Often workshops for K-12 educators are co-sponsored with The Allegheny Intermediate Unit or by area schools districts. The Pennsylvania Ethnic Heritage Studies Center at UCIS is dedicated to teacher training, while the Pennsylvania Governor's School for International Studies provides an intensive summer program for gifted high school students from across Pennsylvania. UCIS also offers seminars and workshops for college faculty in the tri-state area who wish to acquire up-to-date and accurate information on various parts of the world, who wish to discuss curriculum revision issues and to learn about the scholarly resources available through UCIS. Frequently the area studies programs within the center jointly offer such workshops. These programs draw faculty from community and small colleges, as well as other universities and act as a forum for intellectual debate. BusinessAll UCIS programs have extensive and strong relationships with the regional and national business communities. The leadership of UCIS and the leaders of international business enterprises in the Pittsburgh region are in frequent contact and have pursued successful projects together. Leading companies in Western Pennsylvania such as ALCOA, PPG, Heinz, Kenametal and MSA have all partnered with UCIS to develop mutually beneficial enterprises. Area studies faculty present seminars, up-dates, and day or week-long orientation programs for business people who will be working overseas or will have direct contact with foreign partners or subsidiaries. They also participate in business breakfast briefings and conferences on pursuing business in a particular country. UCIS also works closely with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO's), foundations and non-profit organizations to further business links between Western Pennsylvania and international ventures. UCIS is represented on the regional District Export Council and has close ties with the American Council on Germany, the United Nations Association of Pittsburgh, the World Affairs Council and the World Federalists. GovernmentWhen governments need help with international matters, be it the Pennsylvania state government, community governments in Western Pennsylvania, or the federal government, they turn to UCIS. UCIS assists government officials with briefings, background analyses, and updating of current events. Briefings have been delivered to federal government officials, the Governor of Pennsylvania, various state secretaries, state legislators, and the mayor of Pittsburgh. In turn, these government officials provide briefings for foreign visiting groups to UCIS concerning the functioning of state and local government in the United States. MediaUCIS programs provide background briefings and contacts for the media in foreign sites and for local and national news organizations. As well, the area faculty participates in media interviews and in-depth analyses during periods of eventful international activities that occur within their regions of specialization. The University of Pittsburgh's Office of News & Information maintains a university-wide database of faculty experts. General PublicUCIS organizes a substantial number of conferences, colloquia, and forums on international issues that are open to the public. Through the Pitt Informal Program, UCIS associates offer non-credit seminars and courses for adults on international issues. UCIS also offers many community-based lecture and cultural programs by partnering with organizations as diverse and varied as the Senator John Heinz Regional History Museum, the Society for Contemporary Crafts, the Pittsburgh Children's Museum, the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, Phipps Conservatory and the Carnegie Museum of Art, to name a few. UCIS also has strong ties to regional ethnic communities and often collaborates to develop community festivals, art exhibits, film series and musical performances.
